Forget Pizza Hut. Forget Domino’s.
There’s an American pizza chain that almost died in America — but is still thriving in Japan, more than five decades later.
It’s called Shakey’s.
In 1954, a man named Sherwood Johnson opened the first Shakey’s in Sacramento, California, with his college friend Ed Plummer.
His nickname — “Shakey” — came from nerve damage he suffered after contracting malaria during World War II.
He had tremors. His hands shook.
They named the chain after that nickname.
It became the first franchise pizza chain in U.S. history.
Pizza Hut came four years later, in 1958.
By 1974, Shakey’s had grown to about 500 stores across America.
Live jazz. Banjo players.
Pitchers of beer. Friday nights after high school football.
Then came Pizza Hut. Domino’s.
Papa John’s.
By 2026, Shakey’s USA had collapsed to fewer than 50 locations — almost all in California.
Basically dead in America.
But here’s where it gets weird.
In 1973, Shakey’s landed in Japan — through a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation and Kirin Beer.
Japan barely knew what pizza was.
Shakey’s didn’t just sell pizza.
They introduced something Japan had never seen at affordable prices:
The lunch buffet.
All-you-can-eat pizza for the price of a regular meal.
And then it got weirder.
Shakey’s Japan started inventing their own pizzas.
Mayo Corn.
Mentaiko.
Sweet Potato.
Chocolate Banana Dessert Pizza.
And one trademark side dish that, somehow, became more iconic than the pizza itself:
Mojo Potatoes.
Thick-sliced russets, seasoned breading, deep-fried to a golden crisp.
Ask any Japanese person who was a teenager in the 90s or 2000s about Shakey’s, and they won’t talk about the pizza first.
They’ll talk about the Mojos.
I went to Shakey’s a lot in high school.
Honestly, more than I should have.
Tests done? Shakey’s. Date? Shakey’s again. Hanging out with the guys with no real plan? Yeah, Shakey’s.
The pizza was fine. I’m not going to pretend it was the best pizza in the world.
But the Mojos. Man.
We’d just keep ordering them. Like, plate, then another plate, then another.
At some point one of the staff would walk by and kind of look at us. Not say anything. Just look.
I think we’d talk about stupid stuff.
School, girls, who knows.
I really don’t remember.
But the Mojos I remember.
So here’s where we are today.
Shakey’s USA: under 50 stores, fading.
Shakey’s Philippines: nearly 300 stores, booming.
Shakey’s Japan: about 20 stores, still serving the same crispy crust they introduced in 1973.
A chain nearly forgotten in its homeland — still loved in another country — half a century later.
Anyway. If you’re in Japan, Shakey’s is still around. Mojos are still good.
Funny how that works.

🌹#今日の小さな祈り
I have a request for all Catholic sisters and brothers around the world.
Though I am more uneducated, arrogant, and disobedient than anyone else,
I, a Catholic in Japan,
will be praying the Rosary from today until July 1st,
for reconciliation between the Catholic Church under Pope Leo XIV and the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX).
I would like your support in this as well.
Praying to God.
Demanding obedience to the Vatican from the SSPX leadership.
Demanding mercy from the Vatican.
I would like your cooperation in various ways.
Honestly, I myself
support the Second Vatican Council, which aimed at dialogue with modern society.
I also love the Trentine Mass, but I believe that cooperation with the Church should be the fundamental premise.
As a child of Mary,
I love the tradition of humility, obedience, and trust of the great Catholic saints.
I believe the SSPX's stance, which is subservient to the current Church, is problematic from the start.
However,
the criticism should ultimately rest with the upper echelons.
I see no fault in the ordinary believers who simply love tradition and, having no other choice, attend the SSPX Mass.
Of course,
it would be ideal to become familiar with the Nobs Ordo Mass.
However,
even if the Mass changes,
to prove that the Catholic faith of two thousand years remains unchanged,
preserving the option of the Tridentine Mass is in line with the spirit of the Council, which aimed to balance tradition and innovation.
As a layperson who continuously attends the Trentine Mass and maintains contact with simple believers who love tradition both in person and online,
this is my firm belief.
This is why Benedict XVI conditionally recognized the traditional Mass, and why, in that context, devotional groups for the traditional Mass that emphasized collaboration with the Church emerged.
Despite its problems, the SSPX has a history as the starting point for such efforts.
If their excommunication,
and unlike the previous excommunication,
is not limited to just some clergy,
there is an undeniable concern that this could create a trend that severely undermines the Catholic spiritual traditions that tend to be relegated to the background in the current trend of prioritizing the Bible, such as veneration of the Virgin Mary,
respect for angels and saints, and devotion to souls in purgatory.
Of course, our faith is in
Jesus Christ and the Triune God.
Dialogue with other denominations and ecumenism are important.
However,
healthy ecumenism
first and foremost requires a passionate love for one's own tradition.
Just as unpatriotic diplomacy harms a nation.
Gentle Virgin Mary.
Angels who always protect us.
Reliable saints.
To the souls in purgatory seeking salvation.
If we cannot protect these simple children, whom we can cherish, from the danger of division,
what is a "holy, universal Church"?
From conservative to liberal.
The ability of children with diverse viewpoints to coexist is,
the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ,
the Body of Christ.
We are the most beloved brides of our sweet and beloved God,
who take the Virgin Mary as our model and nurture Jesus Christ within us!
Please,
May the children of our beloved God, of Mary,
never again suffer the pain of division.
Jesus, we trust in you.

A formal disbarment complaint was filed against Chief Justice John Roberts at the DC Bar on April 22, 2026, alleging a pattern of financial disclosure violations spanning two decades. At the center of the complaint is the documented commission income earned by Jane Sullivan Roberts while working as a legal recruiter at Major, Lindsey & Africa between 2007 and 2014. According to internal records released by whistleblower Kendal Price, she earned $10.3 million in commissions from elite law firms during that period, some of which argued cases before the Supreme Court in the same years.

Scientists have created one of the most detailed 3D reconstructions of a human cell (eukaryotic cell) ever produced.
This groundbreaking model, often termed a "Cellular Landscape Cross-Section Through a Eukaryotic Cell," combines data from X-ray tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and cryo-electron microscopy to map molecular structures in extreme detail.

Padre Pio could read souls. I trust in his judgement
Brian Burgess@Burgess7281975
"Me, bless an archbishop, no, no, it is you who should be blessing me!” Saint Padre Pio upon meeting Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1967 when Archbishop Lefebvre visited Padre Pio to ask for him to bless the Congregation of the Holy Ghost. The picture below shows Padre Pio kissing Archbishop Lefebvre’s ring. In addition to some well publicized Extraordinary Graces I believe Saint Padre Pio has an almost perfect intuition regarding the Divine Order. Saint Padre Pio Ora Pro Nobis

The problem with your stance is how superficial your understanding of the SSPX’s position is.
To believe that their goal is protection of the Tridentine Mass is their singular or even highest priority is naive. They look down on the Ecclasia Dei communities for their desire only to save the Vetus Ordus.
Their biggest problem is that VAT2 essentially started a second religion. Their belief is that you cannot stray from the dogma, magisterium or tradition of the faith in any way. Deviation is not possible.
You can look at the clergy we currently have and see that we are in a time of chastisement. Many of the authority is heretic and leading souls astray. We are currently getting what we deserve and it’s a shame.
For me the SSPX is a step too far but I respect them and understand that maybe, just maybe they are the ones to preserve the faith.

Potato IQ Indians? Someone needs education because it doesn't matter if your body grows but with it, the brains also grow, it's not necessary.
This low IQ guy needs to google search the CEO names of top murican companies.
There is a website called Google where you can put your question and get an answer. Try there and let me know when you need help because your pea size brain will definitely need it.

In Japan, there are two chocolate snacks.
Same company.
Same shelf.
Same price.
One is shaped like a mushroom.
Called Kinoko no Yama.
Released 1975.
The other is shaped like a bamboo shoot.
Called Takenoko no Sato.
Released 1979.
Both delicious. Both made by Meiji.
And the country has been at civil war over which one is better for over 45 years.
This is not a joke.
The manufacturer holds NATIONAL ELECTIONS about it.
2018.2019.Official “Kinoko vs Takenoko General Elections.”
Over 26 million votes combined.
Campaign posters. Political-style debate ads. Celebrity party leaders. TV coverage of the results.
In 2018, Takenoko won by 169,447 votes.
In 2019, Kinoko got revenge and won for the first time ever.
The party leader cried on live TV.
Mushroom faction says:
→ better chocolate-to-cracker ratio
→ you can hold the stem, no chocolate fingers
→ more elegant design
Bamboo Shoot faction says:
→ superior cookie base
→ higher chocolate content
→ more satisfying bite
Entire Twitter accounts dedicated to one side.
The debate has its own Wikipedia page. In Japanese. It’s called “Kinoko-Takenoko War.”
And here’s the thing.
Japan does this with EVERYTHING.
Sugar on fried eggs?
Soy sauce on rice or next to it?
Left side or right side of the escalator?
These aren’t small talk.
These are positions.
World’s 5th largest economy.
Home to Toyota, Sony, Nintendo.
Leader in robotics and bullet trains.
Also spent 45+ years deciding whether mushroom chocolate or bamboo shoot chocolate is better.
I love this country.
