There are several reasons, but one significant one is this: I’m no longer doing the kind of street work that regularly placed me in dangerous situations, where the cassock and collar served a real purpose, both for safety and for offering the sacraments when needed. That’s not what I’m doing anymore. And online, the priestly identity has brought not only comfort for some, but also tension, anger, and bitterness, especially from Roman Catholics. We don’t administer sacraments online. My voice hasn’t changed. I still carry the experience of theology and spiritual care. But this is a different season, and we’ll see where it leads. I hope to write more on this in the future.

Friends, I am stepping away from priestly ministry. This is a personal decision, not born of scandal. I will still walk with you in prayer, write, and remain close to those on the margins. Keep me in your prayers, as you remain in mine.

The team worked furiously overnight to slow bleeding. Amazing people in the CICU. He is more stable than he was 12 hours ago. Physically, he looks terrible - not surprising given what he's gone through. He's on a lot of BP support. His sugar is very high, probably from stress and steroids. He was hyperkalemic last night, but that is now normalized. He had severe acidosis, but that has normalized. He's on continuous brain monitoring. His lactic is still high but slowly trending down - bad kidneys are probably making it harder to clear. There's no way just yet to take a full account of the damage to his body, especially the brain. We pray & wait & assess the damage. Thank you for your prayers. We're just devastated to be here. He looked so good 24 hours ago. There are no words to capture the emotions of the last 12 hours.

Please pray for Emerson the Brave (DIPG). Pray her family as the make as many memories as possible in the time they have left. Heartbreaking 🙏🫶❤️✝️ From her mom: “Emerson and our family are going through a very difficult time right now. We learned last Wednesday that Emerson’s tumors are growing and there are not any additional treatment options to stop the cancer. The options that would be available have become toxic to her body, and the tumors are breaking through them. Radiation is also not a safe option. Emerson is now on hospice and our goal is to provide her with as much comfort and love as we can in whatever time we have left with her. We have not told Emerson or her brother and sister exactly what is happening but are answering their questions as they come up. We want to decrease any fears and worry as much as possible for them and create as many memories as we can. Last night (Tuesday 7/9) just as I was getting Emerson ready for bed she began to have a seizure. She continued to have seizures, one right after the other, for 2 hours. Even with 2 doses of rescue medicine, they didn’t stop, so we were advised to call an ambulance and Emerson and I are at Helen DeVos. She has not had any obvious seizures since getting here, but will likely have an EEG to make sure we aren’t missing something. She is being monitored and they are working to adjust her medication to hopefully prevent additional seizures. Please keep our sweet girl and our family in your prayers. Our hearts are broken.”
