@MBGilroy Bespoke models built automatically, capturing the trends native to a platform while still retaining the network benefit, humans chiming in when agents need help. Fraud MOs and how we fight changing every few weeks 😁

This is what people don’t understand about fintech. In a world where the software / interaction layer is completely in flux, this is the business most that cannot be replicated overnight. Or over two nights.

Stripe didn’t just process payments. They abstracted compliance, fraud, and complexity. Merchants stopped worrying about edge cases. IMO that’s the bar for vertical AI. Remove the industry anxiety and execute at a higher level. And show value fast.

@ItzSuds I don’t think there are many companies since the Robinhood era that are being formed and staying in the area. But that being said we should do a dinner at a friend’s space on university Ave

I’ve been trying to make Palo Alto a thing again, but I’m realizing no one under 40 fucking lives here. I *really* don’t want to live in SF. Do any founders exist in Palo Alto at all??!! I need some friends

Every reference call on Vinodh + Shyam ended the same way: “I wish we could hire them to run our risk ops.” Fast forward to 2025 - companies like GoFundMe, Cherry, Procare and many more use use @CorisInc to automate all things merchant risk and operations, no cloning required :)

Vinodh and Shyam were building AI infra and pioneering it in risk way back in the late 2010s. Apart from instincts and having an incisive mind for helping customers they’re an A+ team — great to watch their execution over the past couple of years

@jevgenijs They also had merchant cash advance and faster payouts for merchants. Looks like they wound those down as well.

@jevgenijs Amazon did try AmazonPay 10-12 years ago, which merchants can embed to accept payments. Direct competitor to PayPal. In fact, that's the only other wallet button one would see other than PP. There was no ApplePay or others at the time. Think they wound it down a few years after.

@jevgenijs Getting paid (fast) is the holy grail. SMBs will sign up for bank account and merchant account first. Same trend with Embedded Finance, where embedded payments is the starting point. On the spend side, there is all payroll/tips. Less of a daily activity compared to payments

Started thinking about this: Will small businesses bank with the platforms where they get paid (like Stripe, Square, and Shopify), or the ones they use to pay others (like Ramp, Brex, Melio and Bill)?

@deriksutton @dadiomov Wonder if this will be analogous to hiring someone from a staffing agency on probation. Agents with fine-tuned models for specific tasks might outperform generic ones, likely to pass the probation. Ultimate moat will be in your reputation

@dadiomov Yes. In this scenario, an RFP = “run your agent within our sandbox” vs “fill out this excel doc”

Some questions on AI agents and what's to come. Will the software business shift from subscription-based platforms to AI-driven services? How would those services be priced? At first, presumably the price is set by human labor, but presumably it is trivial to spin up as many AI agents as there's demand for, so the transition is super fast. Then, once that's done, where does pricing power come from? Will AI agents be monetized through direct payments (e.g., per-task pricing), subscriptions, or new economic models like AI labor marketplaces? How is an AI agent not similar to a laundry machine or a dryer, where cost = Capex + the cost of electricity? What are the implications of agents negotiating prices and contracts autonomously on behalf of businesses—will this disrupt traditional pricing strategies? How do some businesses even work when you can't rely on information asymmetry + laziness? What happens to banking / financial services, where that's basically the business model? What happens in procurement?
