Did you know that USERRA will protect your job for you should you choose to join the military?
5 years. You can go and serve for up-to 5 whole years right now, and your job and any automatic promotions/seniority increases will be there for you. Even voluntary service, yes.
A 2 year enlistment, for example, and you only have to ‘give up’ (sort-of, see: Parker v. Levy) your freedom and rights for two years along with a payment of up-to your life and you’ll get the chance to apply for the military’s version of workers compensation at the end of it. What you get out of that is variable and super duper stringent comparatively. The chances are pretty high that this goes bad more than it goes well, though. Be warned.
You’ll also get, however:
- VA Loans
- Free dinner at Golden Corral (once a year)
- Your butt looked at (at least once but prolly more)
- To poop in fun places
- The best job you’ll ever have

@EODHappyCaptain We have raised a generation of entitled GWOT veterans. It’s like the pendulum swung to another extreme after Vietnam. We all know people who retire and try to pad their percentages. Is it fraud, probably not. Is it morally right? I don’t know.

I’m sure this post will leave my sphere so let me say this: I’m not saying there isn’t fraud. It’s a government system, so I’m sure it’s there.
What I’m saying is it probably isn’t happening at the scale that people think it is. Most people aren’t going to delve into their personal medical history with you.

We’ve reached a point where so few people know a veteran or active service member that that there is zero desire to understand what real sacrifice looks like.
Everytime a financial podcast drops with a veteran on it, people rush to scream “fraud.”
But, according to the VA Office of the Inspector General, the fraud rate with disability claims is less than 1%.
There are a multitude of conditions that are not physically visible: Traumatic Brain Injury, burn pit exposure, PTSD, gastrointestinal issues, etc that veterans deal with every day.
America just came out of the longest war in our history. Medical testing has gotten better. Documentation of medical issues has gotten better.
You can’t ask America’s sons and daughters to go to war, and then turn your back on them when it’s time to take care of them.
