One day you’re going to hurt a patient by mistake
It will happen no matter how hard you fortify yourself with knowledge
and nothing you’ve experienced will prepare you for it
If you’re lucky it will hurt you more than it hurts them
you will need good mentors to help you heal
10 years ago today my life changed forever.
10 years ago I became paralysed from the shoulders down.
10 years ago my body nearly died, only kept alive by machines.
The past 10 years have been a journey, with brutal early days, but have been some of the best years of my life.
I just had a patient draw his hand away from me when I went to change his pulse ox and tell me he was HIV positive (which I knew) and didn’t want to hurt me on accident.
Imagine fearing human touch because of your viral status.
Be kind to each other.
Another tragic and unnecessary death. I think every junior doctor in today’s NHS can empathise. We’ve all been there, to some degree. Myself included. This is what it’s like. /thread

Also learnt about the factors @NICEcomms look at to determine what drugs pts can get. Looked at costs, strength of evidence and long term benefits through the lens of CF treatment
Interesting discussion about whether we should give Exchange #BloodTransfusions for those with #SickleCell and Endstage Renal failure.
Big question was: Do the benefits of blood Tx outweigh risk of HLA sensitisation and therefore losing the [chance of] transplant?
Attended my first Grand Round today.
Also the first time the Grand Round had a student Nurse attend (according to the woman at the door taking registration) 😂
Learnt lots about advances in Tx of #CysticFibrosis as well as End stage #RenalFailure in those with #SickleCell
Inspiring talk on ‘hip hop psychiatry’ @hiphopsych by Dr Sule, consultant psychiatrist @SWLSTG - so much on mental health can be learnt/taught based on hip hop culture and lyrics. Good teaching tool for communities and groups where hip hop music is popular... #legend#Tupac
Really inspirational lecture by Prof Heather Milburn’s lecture on her work and her career! Had no idea about the potential links between #VitaminD, #Ethnicity and #Tuberculosis
Tonight’s Inaugural lecture by our school member, newly appointed Professor Heather Milburn giving her talk ‘Lung infections: more than just bugs?’ As part of @kingsmedicine Inaugural Series #inspiringtalks
I am sharing this letter, (with the permission of the family), setting out how many people have been helped by organ donation following the sudden death of their son.
Please sign up to the organ donation register.
