How important is the NHL's "Loser Point" in Playoff Standings? The answer, for this season anyway, is... it depends which conference you play in. I took a look at league-wide standings as well as Divisional/Wild Card Playoff Standings. There was far more impact to the Western Conference, notably in the Pacific Division than anywhere else. The Standings on the left side of each image are current standings sorted by Points Percentage (P%) and a tiebreaker of Regulation + Overtime Wins (ROW). The Standings on the right side of each image are the standings if the loser point was completely eliminated and only Wins and Losses were tallied (wins still worth 2 points). These are sorted by P% with Regulation Wins (RW) as the tiebreaker. My findings: Biggest Beneficiaries: 👿 #NJDevils who move up from 25th in the NHL to 16th and go from 9th in the Eastern Wild Card standings to 4th. 🅱️ #NHLBruins who move up from 11th in the NHL to 5th and from Eastern WC 2 to WC 1. 🦆 #FlyTogether who move up from 19th in the NHL to 14th in the NHL and from a lottery team to the Pacific's #2 seed. Biggest Losers: ⚔️ #VegasBorn who drop from 10th in the NHL to 18th and from the Pacifics #1 seed to the Western WC 2. 👑 #GoKingsGo who drop from 18th in the NHL to 26th and from Western WC 2 to a lottery team. 🐧 #LetsGoPens who drop from 8th to 15th in the NHL and from the #2 seed in their division to the #3.
