[Long Post] Eighteen months ago, in December 2024, when Rashford, in a carefully constructed interview with Henry Winter, said, "For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps," few expected him to still be contracted to Man Utd in big 2026. He and his brother expected the biggest of clubs to come calling, throw in millions in wages, and make him the face of a new club. He waited the entirety of January 2025 to find a club. No one came forward. Finally, Unai Emery held out a hand for him near the transfer deadline. What followed next was a cacophony of PR exercise. Any half-decent performance was hailed as the greatest thing ever. The bad ones were carefully omitted. All throughout the next five months, we heard just one thing: Villa was just a temporary stopgap. There is no chance the loan would be made permanent. He wanted Barcelona. It was his dream. Summer 2025. The entire summer we heard, 'Rashford only wants Barcelona,' 'He hopes to play for his dream club Barcelona,' 'He will reject offers that aren't from Barcelona.' All these particularly weakened Man Utd's negotiating position, and finally, when Barcelona entered the frame, they offered a loan and no permanent deal. They weren't even prepared to pay his full wages and expected United to cover the costs. After much haggling, United managed to eke out a deal that will have Barca paying his wages with a €30m option at the end of the deal. Pretty cheap for a supposed world-class player at the peak of his powers (or so his media friends depict him), right? He had a good start at Barcelona, played some important games, scored some important goals. But soon after the usual problems arose. Not committed enough, not tracking back, running into blind alleys, not looking up for better options, etc. Barca fans started to grow tired of him. Now it's looking increasingly likely that Barcelona will not be triggering his €30m release clause and are looking elsewhere. He is also approaching 30. and earns far too much to not be a starter. So my question to Rashford is: Was it worth it? Was the entire song and dance worth it? Was that interview with Henry Winter where you facilitated your own exit worth it? When you should have been leading our next generation, you started playing media games. When you should have developed your own game, worked on your shortcomings, built on your superb 2022-23 season, and become a leader of the squad, you instead became a reclusive figure, developing this attitude that you did not want it enough at Utd. All those shenanigans, including Belfast, really let the club down when they were relying on you as one of the more experienced and highest-paid players in the world to deliver like Bruno has been delivering in some of our toughest times. You were one of our own. You should have stayed and broken records with Utd. Instead, you let everyone down, including your own talent. All I ask is, was it worth it?

Barcelona’s interest in retaining Marcus Rashford has cooled. Barcelona’s sources believe he had a golden opportunity to make his mark this month following Raphinha’s injury but did not fully seize it. The club is already exploring alternative options, although sources close to Rashford say no decision has been formally communicated by the Spanish club. There are also concerns over cost — Barcelona hold a €30m buy option, but as things stand, they do not intend to trigger it [@TheAthleticFC]
