Common story: Kid loves baseball. Decides to quit other sports & specialize in 8th grade. Plays spring ball, summer travel ball, & fall ball. Private lessons over the winter. Ends up swinging/throwing 12 months straight. Does this for 4 years. 48 months straight of the same back/arm stress. And we wonder why so many HS players have Pars stress fractures and torn UCLs. Now apply this to volleyball, golf, basketball, etc. We are breaking our kids’ bodies in pursuit of scholarships. Athletes need an offseason. Especially when they’re 15.

Hard truth: Schools cannot fully overcome poor parenting. Teachers are burning out trying to do the jobs of educator, counselor, disciplinarian, and parent all at once. At some point, accountability has to return to the home.

Kids raised in coaching households learn things you can’t teach in a classroom. Resilience.

Sacrifice.
Character.
Problem-solving. They don’t just watch you coach games.
They watch you lead people. And that lesson lasts forever.

@langstonwertzjr @iluvbryceyoung There are actually less blowouts now b/c the top 8 get a bye. Typically 24 has a better chance to beat 9 than 16 will to beat 1. You can make the argument there are too many teams but there has always been blowouts in the first round. And there always will be. Not a valid point.

@iluvbryceyoung One upset on one side, 4,072 blowouts, byes and forfeits on the other. To quote the great philosopher Spock from Star Trek: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one."

Reducing NCHSAA playoffs to 32 teams, vs 48, makes sense to me. In year 1 of the 8 class system, we see lots of byes and blowouts in Round 1. Not to mention some really long travel times in some classes. Driving that bus on the highway is expensive, especially when a 9-0 loss is coming after you arrive.
