Russia: wants to stage yet another blood-soaked “victory day parade” on Red Square in Moscow, demands through the U.S. president that Ukraine observe a unilateral temporary ceasefire, and threatens to strike Kyiv if Ukraine attacks the parade. Ukraine: agrees not to strike Putin’s parade in exchange for the return of 1,000 Ukrainian POWs, keeps its word, and does not attack Moscow with drones on May 9. Everything passes quietly. Russia: days later strikes Kyiv anyway -- not even some “decision-making centers,” but ordinary people, collapsing an apartment building with a missile and burying 24 civilians under the rubble of their homes. After years of this and countless similar atrocities, I genuinely do not understand how anyone can still cling to childish illusions that “Putin can be negotiated with” or that “Russia wants peace.” Again and again, again and again.

@jakluge but it's not like the affected parties are not doing any of that and just waiting fiddling their thumbs until Iran drops the card, no? plus, what does "opening the strait" even means from Irans point of view? it cannot be trusted as rogue parties inside will make sure to sabotage

The Hormuz leverage will not be the same again in the future because all affected parties will prepare, create more buffers, build infrastructure, increase military presence etc. to make Iran's Hormuz card as ineffective and difficult to use as possible.

Iran probably realizes that it can play the "Hormuz card" only once with maximum effect, and that it is Tehran's only real life insurance. So they have to get the most out of it this time. Once they open the Strait, their leverage disappears, and it will never be the same.

The entire pass in review for the Moscow Victory Day Parade lasted 10 minutes. It started at 10:35 am Moscow Time and ended with the marching band leaving the square at 10:45 am. The Russian Knights and 6 Su-25s deploying white, blue, and red smoke conducted a single flyover.

Putin and 13 "foreign dignitaries" are laying flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Notably, Slovak PM Robert Fico did this yesterday and was not present at Victory Day, as he stated. Putin is flanked by Lukashenko of Belarus and Tokayev of Kazakhstan.

@purlenko @michaeldweiss “According to Trump”? He can’t even ensure his own ceasefire with Iran. He can’t enforce anything between Ukraine and Moscow.

@multiplesanta34 @ragipsoylu yeah I get that it's just typical Trump BS, most likely. but then why does it make sense for Zelensky to issue this decree, hamstringing himself in advance?

@purlenko @ragipsoylu It’s not Trump’s decision to make, like in Iran he’s just talking to make himself sound important.

In other words, Ukraine made Putin buy peace and quiet for his freaky “victory day parade” in Moscow in exchange for 1,000 Ukrainian POWs getting back home. An excellent trade, if you ask me.

@RichardHaass So, wait, Iran are the good guys just like Ukraine and the US is like Russia in that we attacked a blameless country? Or - Ukraine are the bad guys just like Iran and Russia was justified in attacking them? Or the two situations are totally different and we need to assess each?
