After going sick you were given your meds which we all know were Smarties with the colour washed or sucked off, like those white tablets given to you in those little brown bottles. If you were lucky, you were given a sick chit or escape chit, which meant you were excluded from certain activities and sent back to your accommodation to carry out menial tasks, on light duties. Unless you were dying, then you were bedded down. To stop the skivers going sick, a rumour was making the rounds that our MO was insisting on checking the b*lls of all patients. Anyone who went sick from then on was classed as a pervert and would get the p*ss ripped out of them! Nowadays I’ve heard self-certification operates in many units where medical cover has been contracted out because of a lack of medical staff. There are no sick parades any more sadly, well not the kind we had to endure. I think they should bring them back they didn’t do us any harm or did they? Back in the 70’s, along with catching a dose, other SIW's you could end up in trouble for were catching too many rays and getting sun burnt and tattoos infected, resulting in not being able to carry out your duties. The punishment for this was usually a charge and loss of pay. There was a time though when punishments for SIW's were not so lenient. During WW1 if found guilty of a self-inflicted wound in the British Army i.e. Shooting yourself in the hand or foot, the aim being attempting to get off front-line service or even better getting a ticket back to Blighty. The ultimate penalty if caught was capital punishment i.e., Death by firing squad. 3,894 men were found guilty of SIW’s in WW1. None were executed, but instead sent to prison, which I suppose was worth it if they achieved their aim and survived the war.
