i've never paired cognac and fish, and like you it would not occur to me. but it does remind me of the time i only had scotch to drink and a meal of baked salmon. with confidence i announced what a clash we were about to suffer ... before reluctantly discovering great beauty in it (water added to the spirit was especially important in this instance). i was speechless. apparently there is literature in support.

@putnam100 @RWApodcast Ok, I got curious. But I paired it already in my head, because I consume tons of coffee and cheese, and it feels weird. like pairing grilled fish with cognac (unless is a sauce...). But, again, I'll try it.

where does taste come from? is it received or discovered? and if it's discovered, how does (confirmation) bias fit into the discovery process? as for me, i had zero expectation for pairing cheese and coffee before i found it (one sunny morning, in my car, in a parking lot.) since that time i've studied it and tested it on others. the pairing is objectively good, meaning the cheese and the coffee both taste (even) better than they do isolated. i am interested in your data. if you try it now, be sure to use decent, fresh coffee, nothing added to it. also opt for a cheese more ripe than not, soft is fine, but it should have flavor, nothing extremely salty. skip the bread or pastry for the first set of trials.

@putnam100 @RWApodcast It all depends on your taste and cultural habits. As a portuguese, I can't even conceive pairing cofee and cheese. The same for the french or italian, by the way, now that you mention it. And they sure know... Coffee and cheese is an american thing, isn't it?

@scotthortonshow @Cernovich I prefer the Munk debates for judging debaters. Oxford allows for the winner to actually lose support during a debate.
Oxford polls the issue, rather than the debate itself.
