@advocategreen1 @GuyPlummer34449 My reason for commenting is that there is a lot of scaremongering. The pressure that puts on parents to scrimp and save for a private education is inexcusable. As I say, it’s a personal and very individual choice, but all of our high schools have received positive inspections.

@advocategreen1 @GuyPlummer34449 It’s personal choice but my child attends the high school that I work in. Why? I know she will receive an excellent academic education there. I know she will receive support for her autism. I know behaviour is very good. I know that the teachers are both kind and passionate.

@DavidPiesing63 @HaleyCamp @pvbsc1 @GuyPlummer34449 Hardly surprising given the 2021 States decision to abandon the ‘College model’ ie 11-18 schools in favour of retaining three of our ‘secondary modern’ schools then failing to provide the promised 6th Form Centre.

@DavidPiesing63 @pvbsc1 @GuyPlummer34449 @ShaneLanglois The private schools haven’t added capacity; explain the totals remaining fairly static? But I wonder what change in socio-economic make-up might have happened, as those without the money have no route of access to the private colleges anymore.

Are we happy to consider closing of schools when we know that more people will be needed to come to the island to deal with HSC committment, filling the jobs vacated by retirees and the building work desperately needed?
Guy Plummer@GuyPlummer34449

And perhaps the only barrier to more leakage is cost Yet although we can say this saves the State money; as a community are we really happy with having effectively such a large %in private education. Is it healthy for the community?

On a comparative basis re the overall result too in numbers, the same % split in 2025 on a pro-rata basis would have seen 450 rather than 562 pupils at the private schools (year 6 and below). That’s a swing of 112 from pro-rata. At £14k a year per child that’s £1.568m of extra school fees being paid by parents compared to those 112 being educated in the States primary school system.

It’s the biggest standout change across all the stats. Total number of pupils in Year 6 and below has fallen by 392 since 2016, which is the demographic factor of falling total numbers from the birth rate etc. Of that reduction of 392, there are 452 fewer Year 6s and below in States schools, while the number of pupils in private schools has risen by 60!

I have to say that for the first time in 5 years. ESC might finally have the leadership required to deal with some systemic issues eg staff retention and, to a lay person and finally some movement on governing boards for some parents to look again at the state offering.

And how far will parents, looking for the best education, forfeit, saving for their, future, deposits for houses, topping up their pensions, family holidays, supporting local businesses with purchases etc

There are 1528 private students to Year 11 and say approx another 320 in private 6th form Making say 1850 in total. At say £15k per year that’s an extra £27.7 m spent educating our children to A-level
Guy Plummer@GuyPlummer34449

Since 2010 there has been an overall leakage from the state to private education from reception to Year 11 of 4% and more to Year 13 More parents have willing to use their declining real terms incomes for their children’s education.

That’s very “selective” (pardon the pun!). Look at the change in the first table - refers to the change in the number of pupils up to Year 6. Far more parents are paying for private education at primary age since the scrapping of the 11-plus. There’s a 5-6 year time lag re the middle column if you project forward.

@pvbsc1 @GuyPlummer34449 Is that correct? 11-plus decision was made in 2015-2016 if I recall correctly. (Passed initially by 2012-16 Assembly and reaffirmed by 2016-2020 early in that term).
