I appaud @UNODC for needed focus on stimulant drugs #EHRC2024 but urge focus beyond BBV. A cynical view: this speaks more to communicable disease transmission concern among broader 'public' than the health & wellbeing of people who use stimulants. Respiratory conditions crucial!

Concerns incl respiratory risk & care access, unmet mental health need, siloed decimated services failing the most marginalised & supports needed to make a difference

I live in British Columbia. Not only do we offer regulated stimulant alternatives (Dexedrine and Ritalin, last I checked), but we had literal ‘harm reduction vending machines’ set up in a handful of hospitals, that contained all the drug related supplies anyone could need free of charge (the vending machines only lasted a year, however, as 13-year olds with access to them started dying from overdoses). I’m sure you’re somewhat aware that BC has pretty much been ground zero when it comes to implementing a lot of these kinds of policies; safe injection sites/decrim/(ostensibly) ubiquitous supply availability—we’ve done it all. And guess what? Issues related to substance use—overdoses, crime, general health, homelessness—have ALL gotten worse. On the other hand, while BC doubled down on harm reduction, the province next to ours, Alberta, went the opposite direction. They decided to bolster their addiction/mental health infrastructure, by investing hundreds of millions of dollars into ‘recovery communities’ (which offer long-term, residential treatment to people with complex addiction), and increasing access to mental health supports. …and? And overdose data from the first half of 2024 just came out, citing an 8% (YOY) decrease in deaths for BC, and a 30% decrease in Alberta. Their approach is over three times more successful. Harm reduction has its place, for sure, but it can’t be the primary focus—don’t take my word for it, take Dr. Goulão’s, who is the architect of one of the most successful drug policies the world has ever seen.

You think people struggle to get off speed because there aren’t any pharmacological maintenance options? I was addicted to meth for six years, and you know why I started? I got hooked on the pharmaceutical kind (Dexedrine/Adderall), and what that became too expensive/tough to source, I switched to the cheaper/more abundant option. You have no fucking idea what you’re talking about.
