The main cast of Madoka really captures the full spectrum of hope and despair, in a way that feels increasingly relevant to our own grim world. Mami just trying to keep moving with life and staying strong for the people around her. Sayaka the naive idealist who doesn’t know how bad things really are. Kyouko the doomer who’s already had any idealism well and truly crushed. Homura who’s become cold and hardened through trauma but still has that desperate vulnerable person in her fighting. And Madoka the one who dares to genuinely hope and do something radical in spite of fully knowing how impossible things seem. Beautiful stuff. Crazy depth of human experience and expression, that somehow comes out authentically in a story about young girls with magical powers.
