Individualism is the true engine of human progress, the only principle that has ever lifted civilisations out of poverty, ignorance and stagnation.
When individuals are left free to pursue their own goals - to invent, trade, save, experiment and take risks - society as a whole advances in ways no central planner can foresee or replicate. The steam engine, the smartphone, modern medicine and the abundance of food on supermarket shelves did not emerge from five-year plans or collective decrees. They were the unintended by-product of millions of people chasing their own ambitions, responding to price signals and cooperating voluntarily through markets. This is the spontaneous order that F.A. Hayek celebrated: an organic, bottom-up process far more intelligent than any top-down design.
Collectivist ideologies, by contrast, subordinate the individual to the “greater good” and thereby smother the very source of progress. When personal initiative is penalised or replaced by state direction, innovation slows, creativity withers and living standards stagnate.
The lesson is clear. The greatest advances in human welfare have always come not from forcing people to serve abstract collective goals, but from protecting the right of every person to live for their own purposes. A society that celebrates and defends individualism does not become atomised - it becomes prosperous, dynamic and free.
