When I visited Japan, I made a lot of friends, and I’d almost always ask them what they thought of America and what we did in World War II.
Growing up in the U.S., you hear everything from “it was an awful crime against humanity” to “it was a necessary evil that prevented a mainland invasion.”
But without fail, every Japanese person I spoke to echoed the sentiment in the image below: “America showed incredible strength. You were a worthy adversary, and we respect you for it.”
That ability, to admire your enemy even after that level of death and destruction, is one of many reasons I think the Japanese are among the best people on earth.
