You like Gavin Newsom?
His early work was a little too Napa Valley for my taste—too polished, too wine-bar mayor, if you will. But when San Francisco reform politics came out in the early 2000s, I think he really came into his own, politically and ideologically. The whole platform has a clear, crisp message: bold executive action, a confidence bordering on theatrical, and a new sheen of West Coast progressivism that really gives the policies a big boost.
He’s been compared to slick technocrats before, but I think Newsom has a far more bitter, self-aware sense of ambition.
In 2004, Newsom releases same-sex marriage in San Francisco. I think his undisputed masterpiece is “issuing marriage licenses before it was legal.” A move so bold, most people probably didn’t even understand it at the time. But they should have, because it’s not just about equality—it’s also a personal statement about timing, optics, and knowing exactly when to step into the spotlight.
Then comes Lieutenant Governor. A transitional phase, but important. You can really hear the patience here. The willingness to wait. To position. To smile while doing almost nothing, but making sure everyone notices.
And then—Governor of California. I mean, this is where the magic happens. The French Laundry dinner during lockdown—brilliant. The recall election—absolutely masterful. The way he reframes crises as leadership opportunities… it’s like watching a conductor guide chaos into a symphony of press conferences.
Take homelessness. The messaging is extremely ambitious, almost aspirational. But underneath, there’s a quiet tension—like he’s asking: “What does solving this actually mean?” And the answer is… complicated. But the presentation? Flawless.
Critics say he’s all image, no substance. But I think that’s missing the point. Newsom is about narrative. About standing in front of a wildfire, literally or metaphorically, and making sure the camera angle is just right.
And don’t even get me started on his national pivot. The debates with governors from other states, the subtle rebranding—it’s like he’s preparing a greatest hits album before the audience even realizes the tour has started.
Hey, JD?
Try getting a presidential run now.

We're never getting normal politics back. It's literally over.

For so many years people have been saying that Patrick Bateman and I look alike. Now this pic has been going all over the place. What do you think?

@liquid2ulu Makes the Environment look much uglier and hostile tough
English

This is a good thing, btw. Property owners absolutely should try to exclude the homeless, and this is a very cheap way of doing so without ever needing to deal with the state getting in the way of direct force.

@Noneofyour40761 @AscendedYield How does the Uk project that much power? Genuinely curious
English

@AscendedYield Such a weird take, there’s maybe only 4 other countries that have the ability to project power that we do, not to mention the influence of our institutions abroad (for example BBC)

I must admit, Trump has managed to surprise me. I was sure that between crypto, tech stocks, fiat and gold, there is *something* that'll keep moving up or at least stable. But he's being comprehensive in fucking me over.

@anpaure @Ambersulfr @Ken67547214 And I again, I don’t believe that anything happened to him, it’s probably real and about the 1 day old meme
English

@anpaure @Ambersulfr @Ken67547214 Maybe a coincidence, making a joke about this being ai generated doesnt have to be about the meme, the Ai-fingers thing is old.

@Ambersulfr @Ken67547214 I don’t think anything happened to him, but the post is insinuating that the clip is pre recorded.

If it’s fake it’s one of the best fakes out there. It even has the goofy processional lighting the news folks use in the foreground combined with the warm coffee shop lighting that’s awkward and the cold dead corporate lighting away from the counter.
These are things people don’t notice exist… an AI would need perfect information to achieve it that it normally wouldn’t have.
These are what typical photographers would consider “mistakes.”
