You like Gavin Newsom? His early work was a little too Napa Valley for my taste—too polished, too wine-bar mayor, if you will. But when San Francisco reform politics came out in the early 2000s, I think he really came into his own, politically and ideologically. The whole platform has a clear, crisp message: bold executive action, a confidence bordering on theatrical, and a new sheen of West Coast progressivism that really gives the policies a big boost. He’s been compared to slick technocrats before, but I think Newsom has a far more bitter, self-aware sense of ambition. In 2004, Newsom releases same-sex marriage in San Francisco. I think his undisputed masterpiece is “issuing marriage licenses before it was legal.” A move so bold, most people probably didn’t even understand it at the time. But they should have, because it’s not just about equality—it’s also a personal statement about timing, optics, and knowing exactly when to step into the spotlight. Then comes Lieutenant Governor. A transitional phase, but important. You can really hear the patience here. The willingness to wait. To position. To smile while doing almost nothing, but making sure everyone notices. And then—Governor of California. I mean, this is where the magic happens. The French Laundry dinner during lockdown—brilliant. The recall election—absolutely masterful. The way he reframes crises as leadership opportunities… it’s like watching a conductor guide chaos into a symphony of press conferences. Take homelessness. The messaging is extremely ambitious, almost aspirational. But underneath, there’s a quiet tension—like he’s asking: “What does solving this actually mean?” And the answer is… complicated. But the presentation? Flawless. Critics say he’s all image, no substance. But I think that’s missing the point. Newsom is about narrative. About standing in front of a wildfire, literally or metaphorically, and making sure the camera angle is just right. And don’t even get me started on his national pivot. The debates with governors from other states, the subtle rebranding—it’s like he’s preparing a greatest hits album before the audience even realizes the tour has started. Hey, JD? Try getting a presidential run now.

@AscendedYield Such a weird take, there’s maybe only 4 other countries that have the ability to project power that we do, not to mention the influence of our institutions abroad (for example BBC)

If it’s fake it’s one of the best fakes out there. It even has the goofy processional lighting the news folks use in the foreground combined with the warm coffee shop lighting that’s awkward and the cold dead corporate lighting away from the counter. These are things people don’t notice exist… an AI would need perfect information to achieve it that it normally wouldn’t have. These are what typical photographers would consider “mistakes.”
