Eclectic dabbler pursuing the modest goal of omniscience. Striving for Hasidic annihilation of self. Aramaic/Yiddish preferred but Heb/Eng are okay, I guess

@GilStudent "כמ"ש באג"ב" "as is recorded in Agudat Betulah" This is of course a hallucination and RYE is referencing his Igeres Bikores

One of the weirder responsa of Rav Ya'akov Emden is about a rabbi who ruled that a kohen may not go to the cemetery (become impure) for his married daughter's funeral. Clearly wrong (Lev. 21:2). But why didn't he come up with a better reasoning to justify his incorrect ruling?

@bentziavtzon He lost me at puterfes. (Yes, I do recall the conversation here years ago that the name may originally been something like Puterpas.)

@querynotfound well, in 2026 Sindarov had a very good candidate's tournament. Some say the best of all time. But 2005 Topalov did this, and back then there wasn't a match for the FIDE title. So in some ways it was a bigger tournament.

Thinking of using the “so the child will ask” line for other questionable minhagim. “Totty, why do we wait until a boy turns 3 to cut his hair, and then do it at a grave on the hills of Meron?” “So that you should ask, my son. So that you should ask.”

For all those of us on here whose grandfathers went to some intense Chabad yeshiva back in the day and now generations later we suffer without any form of sugar on pesach…

@cudiskafya Just be like me and have regular sugar, even unboiled. Although, not sure exactly what one would use sugar for on Pesach anyways except matzah brai

@cudiskafya This is not a knock on liquid sugar boiled before Pesach, which is based on a halachic cheshbon

@mycr_karenina Earliest source I see is a rabbinic letter from 1819, printed in 1829. It would seem that it was invented in order to complete a rhyme: "b'non shel kedoshim - mi'geza tarshishim"

Did I set out to write 25 pages on the biblical 'kumaz' and on peculiar chastity devices? I did not. Was it worth it though? You tell me! academia.edu/165203404/

This may sound plausible, but is sadly factually false. This could easily be rectified by reading my recent definitive article on the subject!
