As a small channel, we reach out to lots of creators before someone like @AprilynneAlter is kind enough to agree to share her time and thoughts for nothing in return. Of course, we are grateful for any promotion of the resulting episode, but we don't expect it and certainly don't make it a requirement!

Question: When someone invites you to be a guest on their podcast, is it expected for you to do marketing for them? I've received a number of podcast invitations recently, and I'm usually happy to be a guest, even if they're a small or new podcast When episodes are released, I typically repost and comment (especially if I really enjoyed my time while recording, or if I think it's a good episode people might benefit from) But occasionally, after someone invites me on a podcast and I accept, they'll have "terms" Terms which include specific deliverables for me to: - "spread the word about your presence on the podcast" - "share our marketing posts on social media and tag us properly", and - "reshare materials and videos we post tagging you" To me, this feels weird Especially if it's a new or small podcast, I'm agreeing to be a guest and share my perspective or advice without any expectation of a return - The episode probably won't get that many views or impact me in a tangible way, but I'm okay with that because I like having neat conversations and I like helping others get good content And again, if I feel like neat conversations were had, I'm happy to help promote the episode But having such specific deliverables and expectations of re-sharing before a conversation is even had just feels odd to me Suddenly, it seems a lot less fun and a lot more transactional Am I way off base here? Is this an industry standard that I'm just not used to seeing? Folks in the podcast world, would love to hear your thoughts
