@quietpol1tics @LOCthedreamer2 More economic activity, means more demand. Booming demand is the exact opposite thing you need to encourage in a fuel crisis. That's my entire point

How many of the protesters against fuel prices today would you say voted for Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael in the 2024 general election ? The price of fuel is the natural conclusion of FF/FG's idiotic carbon tax policy, the war was just an accelerant

@quietpol1tics @LOCthedreamer2 Sure but in econ 102 its relatively inelastic, not totally. In a supply shock marginal demand increases still matter And if prices rise further we're blowing a hole in our budget and giving us less leverage to target aid to important sectors to keep the economy moving

@quietpol1tics @John_Mac_Spirit @LOCthedreamer2 And farmers But yeah because of a global oil shock that suddenly started raising prices they protested. The oil shock is putting them in the red And their reps have distanced themselves from this because they were working on specific relief packages for their sector already

It’s a hauliers specific protest for a start. The reason they didn’t protest before is because they were desperately trying to make a living despite the govt. Average people don’t protest and not protesting doesn’t mean that taxes are ok. How many protests are there in North Korea?

@loul14950 @kay8X @elonmusk Are you sure about this? Many indigenous’ cultures hunt other species to extinction, cut down huge amount of trees etc. even if you are ignoring the rape, murder and cannibalism

@John_Mac_Spirit @quietpol1tics @LOCthedreamer2 People wouldnt be protesting the way they are now if prices went back to pre-war levels. That shows the tax wasn't protest worthy. The problem is the global shortage The exact tax can be debated but thats not the pressing issue facing everyone despite what the protesters believe

I don’t believe that is true, I might consider a driving holiday over flying somewhere but that’s just using different types of fuel. Price inelastic demand is present in no good quite like fuel. I for one have used no less fuel because of price rises and will use no more if it falls, I will simply have more of my wages left for other items. Fuel is a necessity and should be taxed as such (not at all)!

@quietpol1tics @John_Mac_Spirit @LOCthedreamer2 Using it more. Driving more places. That's what happens when energy is cheap. When it's expensive you drive less If suddenly fuel was cheap people would buy more, which in turn would reduce the amount of oil we have and then the price will increase. We don't want that to happen

People aren’t using more fuel because the price goes down, fuel is renowned for price inelasticity. This is like economics 101. If there are shortages and prices rise this will happen no matter what the tax percentage is, but if the tax percentage is zero the fuel will be less than half the price no matter what.

@quietpol1tics @LOCthedreamer2 For a moment until the shortages hit hard and the price rises rapidly again There is no magical fix to protect us from a global oil shock. This is going to hurt no matter what

@quietpol1tics @LOCthedreamer2 The price of oil has surged over the last month and will keep rising. What happened last month to cause that? Did the government increase taxes or did Trump bomb Iran and Iran closed the strait of Hormuz and cut off 20% of global oil supply?

@John_Mac_Spirit @quietpol1tics @LOCthedreamer2 When you have a shortage of something, suddenly dropping the price will cause people to buy much more of it than even necessary. That will cause the shortage to hit harder, which raises prices even more than originally planned You can't fix a shortage through tax changes

Possibly the most important account on X right now. Well worth a follow. If you want to study the great books of the Western canon with a wonderful group of people, see below.
Athenaeum Book Club@athenaeumbc

Once your culture is gone, it isn't coming back. To preserve a culture, you must continually read the books and ideas that created it. That's why we started an online book club to study the greatest texts of Western Civilization. Every month, we study a new great work — so far we've covered Augustine's Confessions, Dante's Inferno, The Count of Monte Cristo, Don Quixote, etc. Currently, we're reading Virgil's Aeneid. Western Civilization has given us the greatest books ever written, but it takes effort to read them, and even more to read them well. That’s what we’re doing here, slowly, together. If you want to support our efforts, please consider a paid subscription. It makes a huge difference to the time and resources we can dedicate to this project. Paid members get: - Live community book discussions (biweekly) - Deep-dive essays to guide you through the books we’re reading - The full archive of book reviews, essays, and our 100 Great Texts reading list - Access to all community discussion threads (via the subscriber chat) - Ability to vote on what we read next This is not school. There are no grades, no credentials, and no status games. Just a community of readers serious about recovering what’s been lost, and using it to build something better. Welcome!
