💥Big Update: @Polkadot's smart contract platform Revive is now officially scheduled to go live on Jan 20, 2026. Before that, a runtime upgrade referendum will be submitted on @kusamanetwork this week, with enactment expected by the end of December. Yes, this is slightly later than initially planned, but that’s understandable with Christmas around the corner and most teams heading into holiday mode. Still, big thanks to @torstenmove for the clear update 🙏 1/ I suspect some people might be asking: "Wait — what exactly is Revive?" "Wasn’t Polkadot supposed to ship an EVM-compatible contract platform first?" I think part of the confusion comes from terminology inconsistencies in external communication (which may not be @paritytech's strongest area 🩷). 2/ Based on what I’ve been able to gather, Revive is neither a chain nor a simple EVM module. It is the core execution-layer framework of @Polkadot, designed to host multiple virtual machines in the same environment. Specifically: - REVM: a Rust-based EVM engine with full @ethereum semantics and ETH-RPC support - PolkaVM (PVM) : a high-performance, RISC-V-based VM aimed at multi-language and compute-heavy workloads Revive’s role is to coordinate execution across these VMs, unify gas ↔ weight accounting, provide shared access to on-chain state, and expose a single, consistent interface to RPCs and developer tooling via pallet-revive. 3/ This is the key point: What really matters here is not “@Polkadot can run EVM now.” What matters is that Polkadot has, for the first time, embedded its execution layer directly into the core protocol stack, rather than outsourcing execution to parachains. Execution semantics are aligned as closely as possible with Ethereum. Block models are standardized. Gas accounting is coherently mapped. And a true multi-VM foundation is now in place. From here on, Solidity developers mostly just need to switch an RPC endpoint to deploy on a network with stronger composability and a much higher performance ceiling. 4/ And for @Polkadot, the narrative upgrades to something bigger: an open, multi-VM computing platform — where EVM, PolkaVM, and future VMs coexist and collaborate on the same network. Polkadot’s execution-layer story is only just beginning. And its long-term potential goes far beyond being “another EVM-compatible layer.” Also, that’s exactly the direction @Polkadot Hub is being built toward: a protocol-level platform capable of hosting multiple execution models — together.
