The people of Karachi have finally had enough. This VIP culture that treats citizens like insignificant beings is a blatant abuse of power and must end immediately.

The discourse on militancy and proxy warfare is so weak in Pakistan that there are some self proclaimed 'experts' who say that maulana Idris was killed by the Taliban. Some even go to the extent to make ridiculous claims like ISKP and the Taliban are allies. It's as absurd as suggesting daesh and Al Qaeda are the same thing.

Assalam u Alaikum, Saad was presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court today. He is in good spirits and when I told him about the massive social media support and voices raised for him, he was deeply humbled. The CTD and prosecution had nothing further to present, and he has now been sent on judicial remand. Saad had no issues with his legs before, but at the time of his court appearance, he was limping and experiencing severe pain in his foot, which raises suspicion of torture by CTD officials. There were also visible injury marks on Saad’s left arm. This is no longer just about Saad. It is about institutional overreach, abuse of power, and corruption. We will pursue this bogus and fraudulent case to its logical conclusion. Saad’s ordeal must become a source of hope for everyone who has faced abuse at the hands of the system. Saad, our family, and I are deeply grateful for all the support and encouragement. The fight will continue. #ReleaseSaad

There you go. Muhammad Saad’s arrest has gone as global as it gets. Iyad is a well-known Palestinian writer and one of the key voices of the Arab Spring. I could see this coming. Shukran for speaking out, Iyad. Your podcasts with EON were top-notch.

Hi all, Calling out Dawn for a straight-up journalistic failure. Since when does Dawn copy-paste the versions of notorious departments like CTD and call it reporting? No call, no verification, no family position, nothing. Just a one-sided story that plays directly into a fabricated case. Our statements were public. The facts, documents, and visual evidence were a phone call away. You chose not to pick it up. I’d not call it an oversight, this is negligence at min., complicity at worst. You’ve taken a fellow young journalist at his lowest point and helped frame him instead of doing the bare minimum your profession demands. Fix this. Put our side on record. Or own the fact that you chose convenience over truth. @dawn_com dawn.com/news/1997111

Individuals from CTD have caused international embarrassment. Heads should roll once this is sorted, that how at this crucial juncture for the country, some CTD guys caused this humiliation, in addition to causing pain to Saad and his family.

I just found out about this & urge everyone from across political ideologies & affiliations to show support online or in person for @hafizsaadriaz The CTD should put it’s resources to good use & prevent terrorist attacks & not harass, abduct & charge journalists/producers. It can be YOU tomorrow. Bad laws misuse of power can and has become an acceptable trend in society. I am unfortunately in Islamabad or would have joined in person. Thank you to @AyeshaA_Q for raising this. @PRP_org

The details that are coming up on Saad's (@hafizsaadriaz) case are shockingly alarming. According to the sources, Saad was nominated in an FIR by an SHO acting on a personal grudge and the charge slapped on him was Al-Qaeda affiliation. Let that sink in. A label so severe that it follows a person for life, destroying reputation and career in one stroke. The real reason is that a CTD officer had a personal problem with Saad simply because he wrote critically about Iranian proxies. That's it. That's the motive behind a TERRORISM charge. If that's true, then what we're looking at isn't a legal case, it's a targeted personal vendetta dressed up in the language of national security. A DSP had personal issues with Saad, had him picked up, and a fabricated case formally registered to cover the tracks. Legal experts believe CTD will likely lose this case at the very first hearing but the damage of an unconstitutional overreach has already been done. Saad has been patriotic, consistent, and principled. And this is what he gets in return. If they treat people like Saad this way, it shouldn't be surprising when its public discourse is left entirely to those who tear the state down daily, without any consequence whatsoever.

Pakistan has a historic opportunity to change the economic landscape of the region. However, the regional routes can't be redrawn like that. For rerouting trade routes, countries require effective logistics, robust security, and political stability. Pakistan is already trailing due to bad governance, as its subsequent governments failed to invest in railway networks and Ports under the CPEC. Instead of expanding terminals and ML-1, they invested in projects like the Orange Line. A BULL IN A CHINA SHOP.
Mohsen Milani@milanimohsen

Iran is seeking to use Pakistani ports as a partial alternative to the UAE. Pakistan too is taking concrete steps to activate a new transit corridor. If successful, it could redraw regional trade routes, deepen Iran-Pakistan ties, and deliver strategic gains to both countries.

Urgent humanitarian appeal to govt of Pakistan: Afghan cancer and other critical patients are losing their lives because Pakistan visa restrictions are disrupting lifesaving treatment. I personally know two patients who died after they could not return to Islamabad to complete remaining session of chemotherapy/radiotherapy at Shifa International Hospital. Patients traveling legally for medical care should not suffer because of regional tensions or the actions of militant groups. Humanitarian medical visas for Afghan patients must be facilitated urgently. Every delay can cost a life. @Mushahid @HamidMirPAK @NawazSharifMNS @CMShehbaz @PakinAfg @MIshaqDar50

#ReleaseSaad

The abduction of Muhammad Saad is criminal insanity. This egregious wrong must be righted without delay.
Ayesha A.Qayyum 🇵🇰🇵🇸🍁@AyeshaA_Q

To civil society, journalists, and state officials: I am writing as a grieving wife, seeking the immediate and lawful release of my husband, Muhammad Saad. At approximately 3:30 AM this Monday, 12–13 masked men with guns forcibly entered our home and took him away without presenting any warrant or lawful authority. This was an unlawful deprivation of liberty and a direct violation of due process. Only after legal pressure did personnel within CTD register an FIR on laughable grounds. This post facto action raises serious concerns of mala fide intent and abuse of process, where the law is invoked after the fact to justify an illegal act. Saad is a journalist, researcher, and Political Science scholar. His work engages with complex subjects, including Balochistan, Kashmir, and international affairs. He has interviewed recognised public figures such as Former Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar, as well as senior journalists Sohail Warraich and Hamid Mir, and has introduced major international voices to Pakistan’s media space. More importantly, Saad has worked with state institutions when called upon, contributing to areas aligned with the national interest. He was vetted, cleared, and entrusted by the State. Today, that same individual is being subjected to coercive action by its functionaries. This contradiction is not incidental but structural. If individuals who have been vetted and trusted by the state can be subjected to arbitrary detention and retrospective criminalisation, then the question is unavoidable: on what basis does the state expect trust from its citizens? The actions of certain personnel within CTD constitute a clear overreach of authority. Powers granted for public safety cannot be exercised in violation of constitutional safeguards, including the inviolability of the home and the right to due process. The law does not permit enforced taking into custody followed by procedural reconstruction. Saad has never engaged with any proscribed material nor been involved in any unlawful activity. His life and work have remained within the bounds of law and intellectual inquiry. I call upon civil society, the media, and responsible state authorities to take immediate cognisance of this case. Ensure due process. Examine the legality of the initial detention. Hold those responsible accountable. And ensure his safe and immediate release. This is not just about one individual. It is about law and dignity. It is about giving hope to others who have worked for the state and Pakistan whenever called upon, who have trusted the state against all odds. This youth must be protected and safeguarded within a shrinking demographic that believe in state and that is increasingly disillusioned and disenfranchised. #ReleaseSaad #RuleofLaw
