I'm hearing @aidanmundy chair of #Mitcham Community Forum is refusing a community request for the Mitcham Gasworks planning application (500+ flats, blocks to 9 storeys) to go on the agenda for Tuesday's meeting. If true this seems to take the community out of the forum.

Built at great sacrifice, Old London Bridge was by far the longest inhabited bridge in Europe. It was considered a wonder of the world, and seen with enormous pride by Londoners. Both rich and poor donated heavily to its upkeep, often leaving bequeaths 'to God and the bridge'.

Today, Merton Green @pippamaslin helped @MitchamGasworks campaigners to deliver their extremely helpful flyer & knock on doors. Every single person said they oppose the plan. Some expressed disappointment in their Cllrs & MP. People want new homes on the site, but fewer & better.

@MatthewMarks42 @MitchamCrktGrn @MarkGale @MitchamGasworks I think if the designs were more in line with the council’s own local plan (c. 300 units) and included decent onsite parking, there would be less of an impact on surrounding streets. 1200+ residents/135 parking spaces doesn’t sound ideal as part of a suburban housing development

@MitchamCrktGrn @MarkGale @MitchamGasworks Except it contradicts itself both by complaining about too few car parking spaces whilst simultaneously complaining about too much traffic. You can't have it both ways.

Campaigning for sustainable developments inc family houses over giant concrete blocks with single aspect flats + lack of green space, as proposed at Mitcham Gasworks. Lots of opposition to current plans in Mitcham town centre today @Siobhain_Mc @EdithmacauleyM @NDIrons @UsaamaK

No one denies that new homes are needed, but lots of residents living in the surrounding neighbourhood think that the plan packs too many units onto the site, which is, notably, already in a highly congested area, and that the building height is incongruous with the surroundings.

New plans for 595 flats in blocks to 9 storeys for #Mitcham Gas Works now live. It's pure greed and would blight #MitchamVillage. Single aspect (windows on one side only), barely any true social, too tall, too dense. There are much better ways to provide homes on this site.

@MarkGale @MitchamGasworks Looks like 10 blocks rather than six. Very densely packed. Inadequate parking and around double the number of units initially deemed appropriate for the site by the council 😠
