🇨🇳 national and former University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center researcher Yunhai Li (李云海), who attempted to take data from Houston and smuggle it back to China, has been sentenced to a year in the Harris County jail after pleading guilty to attempted theft of trade secrets. Li pleaded guilty to the state jail felony on Mar 6, according to Harris County court records. He was sentenced to 364 days in the jail, and received credit for 196 days he had already spent in custody. Li is expected to be deported once he is released from custody. Li, who researched breast cancer and was working on an anticancer vaccine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, was accused of downloading MD Anderson data on personal devices and uploading it onto 🇨🇳 Baidu’s cloud service. In June 2025, he was confronted by hospital officials about data he had downloaded. He resigned amid an internal investigation, according to court records. In July, days after he left his position, he was stopped at Bush Intercontinental Airport while he was attempting to fly back to China. Customs agents found evidence that he had downloaded data on a personal laptop. At the time, Li told agents that he "believed his research was going to waste" and that he intended to continue his research at a Chinese university. "Li added that he was hoping that (US Customs and Border Protection) would not discover this information on his electronics," investigators wrote. He agreed to plead guilty to a downgraded charge of attempted theft, according to court records. Li began working for MD Anderson in 2022. Parts of his research were funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. When he started working in the US, Li signed confidentiality agreements that were meant to prevent him from sharing information outside the cancer center. He also certified that he didn’t have foreign research funding or outside affiliations. Despite his pledges, Li was receiving funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and was performing research for Chongqing Medical University, according to a complaint written by a Texas Department of Public Safety investigator. While he was a researcher at MD Anderson, Li was listed as an author on medical research published in China. MD Anderson previously confirmed the institution was working with authorities on the investigation into Li. Li was also charged with tampering with a government record over the documents he signed for the cancer center. That charge was dismissed after he pleaded guilty to the felony charge. houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…
