Elon Musk just offered to personally pay the salaries of 50,000 TSA agents during the government shutdown. This is what happens when critical infrastructure depends on a system no one controls. The same thing is occurring with Google, Meta, ChatGPT, etc. Here is the backstory for anyone who has managed to avoid airports for the last month: On February 14, Congress let funding expire for the Department of Homeland Security. The TSA falls under DHS. That means roughly 50,000 TSA officers across the country have been required to show up to work every day, screen every bag, pat down every passenger, keep every airport in America running, all without getting paid. The results have been exactly what you would expect. At least 366 officers have quit since the shutdown started. Callout rates that normally sit around 2% have spiked to 6% nationally, and much worse at individual airports. Houston Hobby hit 55% callouts on one day. Atlanta and Houston both crossed 38% on another. JFK saw 29% of officers not showing up. Philadelphia had to close three security checkpoints entirely. Passengers at Houston Bush and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson waited over three hours to clear security. Houston airports started advising travelers to arrive four to five hours before departure. TSA officers are dealing with eviction notices, car repossessions, empty refrigerators and overdrawn bank accounts, according to their union leadership. This is the third shutdown in less than six months that has forced them to keep working without pay. And then Musk posted on X offering to cover their salaries out of pocket. The fact that a private citizen offering to bankroll a federal agency's payroll is even a plausible headline tells you something structural about dependency. TSA agents are essential. The airports literally cannot function without them. But they have zero control over the system that pays them. When that system breaks, they have two options: keep working for free, or quit. And when neither option is sustainable, everyone waits around hoping someone with enough money or enough leverage steps in to fix it. This is exactly what is happening to most businesses and their search visibility right now. For the last two decades, the default strategy was simple: buy Google Ads, optimize a few pages, maybe run some social media. Visibility came from platforms. And as long as the platforms worked in your favor, everything was fine. But you never controlled the system. Google ads tweaks something and your traffic drops 40% overnight. Meta throttles organic reach because they want you to pay for it. A platform you built your entire lead pipeline around decides to change the economics, and suddenly your cost-per-click doubles with no warning. Content with real authority. Backlinks from trusted sources. Structure that AI systems can read, parse and confidently cite to a user. The businesses that only rented visibility through ads and algorithm-dependent reach are the TSA agents in this story. Essential to their own customers, maybe even great at what they do, but completely dependent on a system they cannot influence. When that system breaks, or changes, or just decides to prioritize something else, they are stuck. Waiting for the next algorithm update to fix things. Hoping the platform gives their reach back. Budgeting more for ads because organic stopped working and they never built an alternative. The Musk offer is a perfect illustration of the problem with dependency. Even if it is legally possible, even if the money actually arrives, it is a temporary fix. The structural problem is still there. The TSA still does not control its own funding. And the next time Congress stalls, the same thing happens again. The same is true for any business that relies entirely on rented visibility. Even if the next algorithm update goes in your favor, even if your ad costs stabilize for a quarter, the structural problem is still there. You are still building on ground you do not own. Businesses that invest in owned SEO and AI search visibility, real content, real backlinks, real authority, are building infrastructure they control. Every article that ranks in Google and gets cited in ChatGPT is an asset. Every DR50+ backlink is a trust signal that compounds. Every piece of structured content that AI models learn to associate with your brand is equity that does not disappear when someone else changes the terms.
