REVIEW: THE RIFLEBIRDS OF PORTLAND – APRIL (2026 REISSUE) maximumvolumemusic.com/review-the-rif… via @Maximum Volume Music “‘April’ evokes the 1960’s and that period up to the explosion of the Pacific Northwest’s music scenes in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It is a delight.”

@radical__middle exceptionally talented in so many mediums (I love his drawing most of all)--but a right nutcase.

A lovely lyrical folk tune (I think I heard fiddles! and a nice change of key, perhaps, in the verse) to swell the ranks of "April" with another excellent song. Just like old times: heard on the airwaves and then it is gone--but there'll be a "next time" on April 3rd.

𝗝𝗢𝗘 𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗔 𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗝𝗘𝗪𝗦 I promise I'm not making this up. Joe Rogan — who has 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 of listeners and considers himself well-informed — was asked by Gad Saad to guess the number of Jewish people in the world. His answer: 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. He then took the "conservative" position: 500 million. The actual answer — which Gad Saad had to deliver like a man defusing a bomb — is 𝟭𝟯 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. Total. On the entire planet. Rogan's joking response: 𝘚𝘩𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘧𝘧. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘶𝘺'𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺. He was off by a factor of 70. Here's what makes this more than just funny. The Jewish people represent 0.2% of the world's population. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁. For every single Jewish person on earth there are 100 Muslims. And yet Jews account for somewhere between 25 and 30 percent of all Nobel Prize winners in history. The most persecuted people in human history. The smallest major religious minority on the planet. And somehow the source of more Nobel laureates, more scientific breakthroughs, more literary giants and more cultural contributions per capita than any group that has ever existed. 𝟭𝟰,𝟮𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. That's it. There are more people in metropolitan Tokyo. And this morning in London, someone burned their ambulances. Context matters. Numbers matter. And sometimes the most important thing you can do is just look them up.

If you're not aware of Portico, the new literary journal from the Institute of Religion and Public Life, give it a look! I'm very curious to see how this project shapes up. porticoquarterly.com/essays/
