The willingness of major European states such as Britain and France to send their military forces to actively defend counties in the Middle East but not to defend Ukraine shows how Europe has a distorted sense of its own interests.

My home team Grimsby Town (famous for our fish docks, and fish generally) traveled to Anfield for a cup game, being beaten 5-0. I listened on the radio and heard as our supporters sang chants about LFC players with fish origins (Kenny Dogfish stuck in the mind). Although we got hammered, as a young kid those comedic chants stuck and a fondness for LFC ensued. A little anecdote: I did the stadium tour last year and one of the guides asked where we’d come from . When I told him, he recounted that same match and the same fish related chants being made that day. Obviously stuck in some peoples memories.
