What are onchain games? There are many terms floating around: • web3 games • blockchain games • web2.5 games • onchain games • autonomous worlds And many mistake games like Parallel, Big Time or ZTX with (fully) onchain games like Pirate Nation & co. An explanation: The difference between onchain games and regular web3 games is similar to the difference between AR and VR. In AR, some of your experiences are digital (augmented) → in most web3 games, some parts of the game are onchain (skins, tokens, cosmetics) In VR, all of your experience is digital (virtual) → in onchain games, all of your game logic is onchain in smart contracts Game logic can be the position of your character, a trade, results of a fight, a crafted item etc. This opens up different possiblities, which I'll talk about another day. The biggest onchain game out right now is @PirateNationNFT. When you play the game, you don't need to sign any transcations, even tho everything is being recorded on Arbitrum. Txns run in the background and are paid for by the game itself. With this the game plays and feels like a regular browser game. The studio behind it, @ProofOfPlay, is doing their best to make their games (more coming) as frictionless as possible while benefitting from being onchain. ------ If you wanna try out the game, now is a good time since they just started a new event "Forgotten Gods". @kevinlambert Yes...but they're not using web3 technology in compelling ways to draw people away from playing the web2 versions. Just the traders who are going to play (temporarily) to extract value.
