It’s not perception. Let me spit some hard truths that are mostly perceptions but that have almost become hard wired in Brahmins’ minds. I’m sure I’ll be bashed on all fronts for this including Brahmins and DMK. And others, of course, simply because. Brahmins in TN carry the weight of DMK hatred on Brahmins. Brahmins look upon themselves as the most devout Hindus (though every Hindu caste, varna may think so too). The Brahmin hatred angle: DMK’s Brahmin hatred has seen itself go from threatening to pluck people’s poonool to shave off their tufts to creators of popular culture echoing Brahmin hatred in their films, plays, novels to non-representation in assembly to erasure of contribution to society, art, literature, culture, to conscious sidelining of Brahmins in politics to verbal attacks to no offerings to them in any government related schemes. This has been copied and carried out by the ADMK, the only redeeming factor of the ADMK being JJ herself was Brahmin. (I’m not justifying either stand - Brahmins’ perceived and real victimisation (as the case may be), or Dravidian perceived or real hatred for them (as the case may be). The Hindu hatred angle: According to Brahmins, a Christian in DMK is able to be a practising Christian, a Muslim a practising Muslim but a Hindu is required to be either non-religious or openly secular. Not wishing for Hindu festivals, not recognising April 14 as Tamil New Year (jury’s still out on this), etc may look like small things but go deep in solidifying perceptions among people. In short, Brahmins have long felt like they are consistently short changed in their own land. (I’m still speaking of victimhood and intent and not getting into discussions of whether Brahmin hatred is justified or not, historical context, Santana dharma, varna system, etc. I’m simply talking about what today’s Brahmins feel about DMK). Yesterday I was going through some insta stories of people who I know for a fact to be Brahmin. They are all voting for BJP, ADMK, TVK and NTK because of the following reasons: 1. BJP obvious choice since they uphold sanatana dharma, legitimise caste consciousness. NOT because of representation in govt since for the last few years since Annamalai’s entry, BJP backing Brahmins have finally realised that BJP serves the Hindu OBC people only. (Again I’m neither saying this is good or bad. Just observing). 2. ADMK because they’ve allied with BJP and current ADMK’s hatred of Brahmins has diluted to a large extent and they’re not nearly as vehemently opposing of any group of people as the DMK. 3. TVK because DMK hatred, AND the fact that TVK has fielded Brahmin candidates in this election. Vijay himself may have mocked Brahmin figures in his movies but that may pale in comparison to DMK’s own treatment of Brahmins over the years. 4. NTK because Seeman has been openly supportive of Brahmins and has fielded Brahmin candidates. Brahmins are a micro-minority in society yet wield a lot of influence. The reason why they have (at least in TN) not fought for nor received electoral representation is because a) Dravidian ideology identified Brahmin hegemony (real or perceived) early on and took it upon itself to make Brahmins irrelevant in public life b) Brahmins themselves are not hard wired to fight for their (justified or non-justified) rights. Especially if pitted against a verbally abusive group, most Brahmins might silently walk away rather than going head on. They try to avoid conflict and as a group, are more interested in their own survival and upward mobility rather than public service of any kind. Service minded Brahmins in philanthropy, in NGO’s, in private welfare organisations do well because of lack of in-fighting in these spaces. I support DMK ideologically yet I know for a fact that I will never be able to get near the seats of power. My use to them will be limited to what I can do to them using my real or perceived influence in whatever walk of life I’m in. (1/2)

Their use to me might be close to zero. What most Brahmins don’t realise is - Vijay who has taken a stand against DMK (because it is the most obvious stand for a newly floated party), also might not give Brahmins electoral representation or even take a neutral stand on them. Years of anti Brahmin rhetoric has ensured that anti Brahminism has been implanted in the Tamil consciousness. It is near impossible to erase. It is impossible for Brahmins to go back to the era of the pre-independence where they were able to wield absolute power over other castes. Brahmins who realise this early usually move abroad where they can form their own little cliques and live a completely capitalistic, apolitical life. Those without that opportunity live here, covertly creating their small bubbles of immunity from the outside world either through wealth generation or creating a cosmopolitan lifestyle around themselves to merge with the mainstream. Those without the economic opportunity to do that live just covertly, minding their own business and working hard to move to the afore mentioned step. Tamil Brahmins in public life like in media, journalism, law, cinema, literature, uniformed services, public healthcare, lower level government services feel the most brunt of the subconscious Brahmin hating mindset of their colleagues and counterparts. It leads to either silent resignation or vocal outrage. Neither will change things. It is high time that Brahmins in TN realise no political party is ever going to give them electoral representation or change people’s mindsets about them. Even if one or two Brahmins go close to seats of power, they can’t bring about real change in lessening open abuse, inclusion in welfare schemes, fair representation in government, etc. Brahmins themselves will never organise among themselves to bring about this change. So status quo will continue. People’s extreme reaction to a Brahmin woman having said all this will be visible in the comments section soon. Stay tuned. (2/2).

As a GSB with ancestry hailing from Salcette in Goa this whole episode leads to a mixed bag of emotions & also some questions (about Hindutva's approach to Christianity). Almost all GSB families were victims/survivors of the Goan Inquisition & would've a branch that would've become Catholic (under duress) if you go far back enough. I recently visited the village in Goa (now almost 95%+ Christian) from where my ancestors escaped to the Kudal/Wadi kingdom in the early 1600s. I underwent extremely mixed emotions when I was there which I really can't put into words. As a GSB Konkani you are always exposed to Catholicism & we often take part in church activities while maintaining our Hinduism. This brings me to the difference in how Hindutva types view Christianity vs Islam. Islam & the condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan & Bangladesh entirely occupies the mindspace of these people. Their obsession with India’s Muslim neighbors is because these people are atheistic Indian nationalists & not practicing Hindus worried about the well-being of Hindus across the world. If they did the following instances would've been more prominent in the discourse: Southeast Asia 1. The Forced Hispanisation & Catholicization of Hindu kingdoms in the Phillipines that was contemporary to the Goan Inquisition (more in comments). 2. The campaign by the Protestant Methodist Church of Fiji & Rotuma that resulted in Fiji going from 55% Hindu majority to 24% today (that included military coups, forced conversions to Christianity, burning of Hindu homes, assault & destruction of temples & rapes of Hindu women). Africa: 1. The forced Catholicization of Thamizh Hindu indentured laborers in Reunion (with attempts at revival of Shaivism there in full sway). 2. The Durban Riots in 1949 that involved mass killings, arson & destruction of property & rapes of Indo-South Africans. The aftermath led to a large number of suicides within the community. After decades of failed attempts it spurred conversion to Pentecostal Protestant Christianity with only 37% Indo-South Africans being Hindus today. Caribbean: 1. The repression in Guyana 1964 onwards coinciding with the overthrow of Chhedi Jagan's regime & including events like the stabbings in Enterprise & the Wismar Massacre. Led to a significant minority converting to Protestant Christianity. Europe: 1. The lack of legal recognition, regular demolition of temples & attempts to ban Hindu scrips especially the Bhagwad Gita in Russia backed by the Orthodox church. 2. The lack of legal recognition & legal suppression of Hinduism as a "cult" in Malta (a Catholic theocracy) leading to almost half of the community converting to Catholicism. Recently, English-speaking democracies are seeing aggressive calls for forceful "assimilation" (beyond the adoption of English & the national civic culture) of non Christian brown communities implying conversion to Christianity & adoption of Christian names. None of this is ever highlighted or sought to be addressed by the Hindutva types or their ecosystem. They're fixated with the Muslim community whereas nothing similar has happened to Hindu diasporas in Christian majority countries. Infact Hindutva types claim inspiration from the Reconquista & the creation of the European & Western identity that excluded Muslims & wish to repeat the same. The most toxic anti Muslim narratives of the Hindutva ecosystem: Love Jihad & Mob Lynching, both come from the Christians of Kerala & the Northeast. This is especially ironic when the atrocities mentioned above from Philippines to the assimilation debate involve Hindus & Muslims as victims equally & together. Maybe there is a lesson in this for the future?

In Barra village of Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the bride's family was surprised by the demands of the groom's family!! ☆The groom's demands are being discussed all over the city. ☆These demands are not about dowry but about the method of solemnization of marriage and improper traditions!! The demands are as follows:- 1- There will be no pre-wedding shoots. 2- The bride will wear a saree instead of a lehenga in the wedding. 3- Instead of absurd obscene deafening music in the marriage lawn, light instrumental music will play. 4- Only the bride and groom will be on the stage at the time of the garland. 5- Those who lift the bride or groom at the time of the garland will be expelled from the marriage. 6- After Panditji started the marriage process, no one will stop him, no one will interrupt him. 7- The cameraman will take pictures of the rounds etc. from a distance, not by interrupting Panditji repeatedly. Because it is a marriage ceremony being performed in the presence of the gods by invoking them. Not shooting a movie. 8- The bride and groom will not pose directly on the instructions of the cameraman. 9- The marriage ceremony should be held during the day and the farewell should be completed by evening, so that no guest has to worry about the problems caused by eating food from 12 to 1 o'clock in the night, such as insomnia, acidity, etc. Apart from this, it does not take the guests till midnight to reach their home and there should be no inconvenience. 10- Anyone who asks the newlywed to embrace in front of everyone will be immediately expelled from the marriage. 11- Any kind of meat and liquor will be prohibited in marriage, gods and goddesses are invoked in marriage, seeing meat and liquor, the gods and goddesses get angry and leave without blessing the bride and groom. The result is that the girl's family has gladly accepted all the demands of the boy..!! A very beautiful suggestion to improve society..! Exemplary to all..!! 🙏🏻Marriage is a sacred bond. Stay within the limits. 🙏🏻

सोनिया माइनो की पुलिस भी फ्रांसिस जेवियर की इज्जत बचाने ऐसे ही कूद कर एक्शन लेती जैसी मोदी जी की डबल इंजन पुलिस ने लिया है। More the things change, more they remain the same.

Dear @DrPramodPSawant @pushkardhami You had Gautam Khattar's brother Madhav arrested from Dehradun for what Gautam said about Francis Xavier in Goa. Now this is what his own letters say. Will you issue arrest warrant against Francis Xavier also now? What should a person be called who destroyed Hindu temples and idols?

While researching for my upcoming book on Goan History, here is what I found, in the words of Francis Xavier himself. Yeah, the same Jesuit Missionary who is deified as 'Goemcho Saib' and whose body lies in a church in Old Goa. These are HIS words.

Francis Xavier arrived in 1542 with a chilling mandate: "Rigor de Misericordia." ⚔️📜 Before the Inquisition even officially began, the "Rigour of Mercy" was used to raze every Hindu temple in Goa to the ground. Xavier specifically targeted the Brahmins, knowing that if you break the keepers of a civilization’s language and knowledge, the culture collapses. @ShefVaidya

A fishy story from Gujarat In the coastal village of Paneli in Gujarat's Kathiawar, Premjibhai Thakkar of the Lohana caste group stepped into the fish trade. The Lohana community was staunchly vegetarian. They saw it as a dirty, stinky business. Premjibhai was ostracised at once. No one shared water with him. No invitations came for weddings or births. His children faced taunts in the streets. The family tried to return. Begged, in fact. They even gave up the fish business. They fasted and prayed at the temple. The motabhais still refused. Tired of seeking respect and not getting any, Jinnahbhai Poonja, Premjibhai's son, burned with rage. He had seen his father bow in shame. He had heard his mother weep. Why beg from those who threw us out? Through Khoja friends, his partners in trade, the family turned to Islam. In the late 19th century, Jinnahbhai embraced the faith and joined the Ismaili community. He became the first Muslim in the direct line. His son, Mahomedali Jinnahbhai, was born into this new faith. Jinnahbhai went on to break India and found a new country. It all began with some vegetarians believing they are superior to the majority Hindus who eat fish/meat because their religion allows them to choose, according to taste.
