On April 9th in 1609, Spain signed a truce with the Dutch Republic after 40 years of trying to crush it. Spain had the largest empire on earth. The Dutch Republic had no king, no natural resources, and a third of its land below sea level. But Spain went bankrupt first. The truce did not formally recognise Dutch independence: the Spanish could not bring themselves to write that down. But every European power read it that way. Within weeks, France and England guaranteed the Republic's sovereignty. The Dutch used the twelve years of peace to build the VOC into the largest trading company in history. When the truce expired in 1621, Spain resumed the war. By then it was already too late.
