@snom953 @RGroph Can't you completely skip faction dialogue? Seen people do it all the time. For the codex you just claim your reward, at best you read the generic challenge you need to do for the reward like "kill 3 players with a shotgun" and that's it. Am I missing something?

@ranzu312 @RGroph you literally cant ignore it though. Completing contracts leads to unskippable cutscenes which are basically terminal length. And the "skippable" CODEX terminals you have to read anyways because CODEX challenges reward you with free loadouts and weapon blueprints for late game

So, new Marathon has been released. And I was thinking, that it would be nice if the Marathon 2026 would've been for the whole Marathon series what a Doom 2016 is for a Doom series. A great return. And this fan art - for those people who wanted that return. And I'm among them.

@Arrrrash @chrismiller558 A lot of people interested in the world and story will obviously not be interested in that. That's what a lot of the frustration comes from for some imo. I think the story aspect being so sidelined and sparse compared to the amount of hours you have to put to experience it in-

Ignore this if you are just gonna reply dead game lol But I am curious to discuss with people why yall think Marathon is still losing players. I truly believe it was going to stablize. Is it too hardcore or are players just bored of the gameplay loop? If you have fallen off Marathon I want to hear from you!

@AlmanaxWinch @Onepeg Neither is Marathon tho? Arc at least got the head start before having issues, that alone will give it enough to sustain itself for a while. I really don't see Arc as a good counterargument.

@AlmanaxWinch @Onepeg Arc Raiders already sold enough to make 2 new games and give Embark financial stability for a long time, and it's current player count is more than double of Marathon's Arc Raiders very much succeeded at this. Not saying Marathon needs PvE but Arc Raiders is an awful example.

@Onepeg People want a PvE mode to not compete in PvP, i can understand wanting a PvE mode, but why the fuck would you mix it in, look at how arc raiders failed with this

@jadel4w Im making the assumption that if steam player count is very low chances are playstation is similar Tho, again, very specific cases Curious how impactful the self fulfilling prophecy part is tho. Makes logical sense but would love to see if there's any data on it (the irony lol)

@ranzu312 You can’t see the player count on console tho?

@jadel4w To be fair, if it's free I have no problem trying them. I've done that a lot. I'm talking about paid games in playstation (that's where I mostly play). You can't refund a game there. And if the population is very low on steam, well. Granted, that's a minority of a minority.

@ranzu312 Or people can just download them and see if it’s just an issue. Refund if paid, uninstall if free (which many are). Ultimately it stops people trying them and becomes a self fulfilling prophecy

@jadel4w If I can add something: I think it's at least useful for multiplayer pvp games. If population is very low, some games are unplayable due to SBMM not being able to work properly. Being stomped repeatedly by more skilled and experienced players is not fun in most games.

@Mephisto_Twitch For starters Arc Raiders seems up my alley, so I don't think it's the extraction shooter part. And for storytelling I do genuinely believe they could if they were less conventional, like I said in another comment. But it is what it is.

@ranzu312 Yeah I mean, if you're not into the extraction shooter aspect, there was no storytelling improvements that Bungie could make that would bring you on board there.

tbh the Priority Contracts and the dialog with the factions is genuinely fantastic. Say what you will, but the game goes to genuinely great lengths via this dialog to try to hook you into the role of a Runner. I think it works if you give it a chance to let it.
Alfonso Guerra (comms open!)@ranzu312

@Rythayze If THAT'S the cool storytelling part, will new players years later be able to engage with it and solve it themselves? It's REALLY cool, but I'm not convinced it's a good replacement for other, equally cool and experimental but accessible kinds of storytelling.

@Mephisto_Twitch That's what I liked about the original games. How experimental they were with their storytelling for the time. New Marathon seems to cater more to pvp players that don't care about story, and so it doesn't inconvenience them.

@Mephisto_Twitch I think it could definitely be done, but it would be intrusive and would force you to at least pay some attention to what's happening in the story. Wild stuff like randomly trapping you in a cyborg dream mid match. Avant Garde stuff. Maybe not that crazy, but unconventional.

@Mephisto_Twitch And since I don't enjoy the gameplay that much, 90% of the game is already meh for me. While with the originals, even if the gameplay was meh, the terminals, story, and the little connections between story and gameplay was a big chunk of the games, and kept me engaged all the way

@Mephisto_Twitch The dialogue is great. The codex too. But that's it so far. And it's an optional/skipable aspect in the main menu, unlike the og Marathons. I guess it feels very safe, standard and unintrusive. Not really pushing any boundaries, unlike the og games.

@ranzu312 @Rythayze No. There’s main story in game through priority contracts. And the mystery of what happened to the colonists is getting opened up mainly through the codex entries in game when you extract loot

@BLTZ2894 @RiloeGaming @ChunkyPuffs303 Worst case scenario, these are inferior and very lackluster compared to the original. But again, I think it's still worth it for new players and they would a 100% prefer that than just missing out entirely imo. The "you had to be there" would still be present in this scenario.

I will truly never understand how people can think community controlled, interactive, trans-media storytelling is the “lazy” version of storytelling, when classic FPS campaigns are literally just “shoot enemies in a series of spaces and then play a movie scene”
Luc // HiddenXperia@HiddenXperia

The way Bungie are telling Marathon's story - and the way we're discovering all of its lore - are some of the coolest methods of video game storytelling I've ever seen This is the exact kind of story discovery I spoke about so much before launch, they're absolutely killing it🔥
