Pat and his team have done some of the best research work on this - requiring the state test only (esp. when private schools had not been taking it previously) seemed to be a contributor to quite low private school participation rates in Louisiana’s voucher in the early years journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.3102/01…

What if one of the most effective ways to increase academic gains in public school is a private choice program? The research may surprise you. 🎧 From the lastest episode of @QMCast with @parthurgraff @SchoolChoiceNow

Met Amaan recently and came away very impressed by the tech and strategy. If this works, it’s not only an unlock for states with true ESAs like AZ and FL, it could go a long way to making legislators in other states comfortable with enabling true ESAs and not just vouchers.

It's particularly notable that it's coming from the charter leaders themselves. Friends of mine who work in #nolaed at prominent charter networks sound exactly the same as districts. "Blank School should just close and we should get their kids. They're not that good." 3/n

Abundance in education would be thinking about how we enable smalls or single site schools to thrive in an era of declining enrollment. This is the opposite of that. Unless you're one of the big school networks, you don't get to exist. veritenews.org/2026/02/25/new… 2/n

The conversation about enrollment declines has mostly been about how to manage buildings and district finances. It's being thought about as a zero-sum game and it's striking that New Orleans education leaders are basically thinking about it almost identically to districts. 1/n

The entities that I think are most well poised to take advantage of new school choice policies are....districts and charters. They have all the infrastructure (physical and human) to create new offerings and new choice policies make it really easy. They just have to want to.

"Conversations with parents who chose homeschooling made clear that they were not dissatisfied with the school system, but were seeking alternatives that offered more flexibility, individuality and personalized learning." People aren't political about their own kids education.

"But there is a relatively easy fix for this issue: just create more specialized high schools." The solution to there not being enough space at schools people want to go to is to create more schools people want to go.

There's no one right way to support founders, just different ideas of how to guide people through the process given the goals of the founders and support organization. I'm excited to see more orgs support founders. It's hard and messy, but so critical. 5/5

When I was at @4pt0schools, @mcandler would often talk about how there were different knobs you could turn to support new ideas - coaching, community, cash, curriculum. 1/4

What if instead of retaining students reading below grade level (which is a great way to piss off families), schools could opt to move to a competency based model a la the Steubenville Ohio? Leverage the threat to shift how schools actually operate. katv.com/news/local/ark…

There's a huge opportunity to support the educators building these incredible school models. Appreciate @michaelbhorn letting me talk about what we're seeing in our work with @BHopeCharters. Shoutout to Bill Hansen and @allisonserafin1 for building everything we're talking about.
Michael B. Horn@michaelbhorn

It’s not the business opportunity that mobilizes most microschool founders—it’s the chance to make an impact on their students and communities. However, developing a sound business model is crucial to sustaining these schools and scaling their impact. I sat down with Bill Hansen, CEO of @BHopeCharters and @raphaelgangedu, Director of Education at @StandTogether to discuss how founders can build those models and the role that microloans can play in supporting them.
