I want proof of what happened. The Governor has assured that a letter will be sent to the Home Minister and DG Shipping..."

Urgent Call for Comprehensive Investigation Into Multiple Onboard Deaths and Disappearances of Indian Seafarers Under Anglo-Eastern Ship Management A series of deeply concerning incidents involving Indian seafarers employed on vessels managed by Anglo-Eastern Ship Management has prompted urgent calls for a high-level, multi-case investigation by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). Families of seafarers, maritime professionals, and welfare organisations have expressed alarm over repeated cases of unexplained deaths, disappearances, delayed reporting, and suspected lapses in evidence handling. These incidents—spanning from cadets to senior marine officers—indicate a possible systemic failure in crew safety, transparency, and accountability within certain vessels operating under the company’s management. 📌 Major Cases Highlighted 🟥 1. Death of Third Officer Shivam Malik (October 2021) Third Officer Shivam Malik, sailing onboard MT Shandong Zihe, was found dead on 1 October 2021. While the company reported the case as suicide, the independent post-mortem conducted in India indicated: Fractured hyoid bone Fractured thyroid cartilage Clear signs of ante-mortem strangulation These findings suggest potential foul play. The family has alleged: Evidence tampering Missing personal belongings Non-transparent communication from the company Delay in receiving crucial records 🟥 2. Disappearance of Cadet Sarthak Mahapatra (February 2026) Cadet Sarthak Mahapatra, aged 22, went missing on 3 February 2026 from the vessel EA Jersey while the ship was voyaging from Mauritius to Singapore. He was last seen entering his cabin. Despite search operations: He remains untraceable Family members report significant delays in initial reporting Allegations include improper search protocol implementation and lack of procedural transparency This incident has raised serious concerns regarding cadet safety, particularly for first-time joiners. 🟥 3. Disappearance of TEO Ashwin Kumar Hari (April 2018) Trainee Electrical Officer Ashwin Kumar Hari went missing from MV Shahrastani near Mauritius in April 2018. According to his family: The company’s version contained major gaps and inconsistencies Crucial evidence was poorly preserved or not shared Communication remained unclear and incomplete 🟥 4. Unexplained Death of Chief Engineer Sanjay Chaudhary (Year Widely Reported in Maritime Circles) Chief Engineer Sanjay Chaudhary reportedly died onboard a vessel under Anglo-Eastern management in circumstances that raised several doubts. Key concerns included: Absence of CCTV footage from critical onboard locations Unclear chain of communication from ship to shore Improper handling of mortal remains and personal effects Discrepancies between official reports and information given to the family As a senior officer, his case drew attention from maritime unions and senior ship officers nationwide. 🟥 5. Suspicious Death of an Electrical Officer (Year Widely Circulated in Maritime Forums) Another Electrical Officer’s onboard death under Anglo-Eastern management raised similar red flags: Delayed notification to next-of-kin Discrepancies between ship reports and later updates Missing belongings Lack of adherence to forensic procedures This further reinforces the possibility that the problem is systemic, not isolated. 📌 Common Pattern Across All Cases The following patterns are visible across multiple incidents: Delayed Reporting to families and authorities Inconsistencies in the official versions of events Lack of proper evidence preservation (CCTV, logs, belongings) Ambiguous communication from company officials Non-adherence to mandatory procedures under the Merchant Shipping Act Lack of transparency in cross-border investigation processes These repeated lapses have created an atmosphere of fear, mistrust, and insecurity among Indian seafarers and their families. 1/2
