🇨🇦 Edmonton police are warning parents and youth about a rise in sextortion targeting teens online, with some victims as young as 13.
The Edmonton Police Service says it received 983 reports involving youth victims between 2018 and 2025, including 168 cases in 2024 alone. Most victims are between 13 and 16 years old, with 15 being the most common age.
Sextortion occurs when someone pressures a victim to send explicit images and then threatens to share them unless money or more material is provided. Police say offenders often keep escalating demands even if victims comply.
According to Statistics Canada, reported incidents of online child sexual exploitation across the country rose 347 per cent from 2014 to 2024, reaching 16,905 cases last year.

An Edmonton man found an injured person with a broken foot outside his shop, but no ambulance arrived for more than 20 minutes.

An Uber driver in Lethbridge, Manvir Singh, 27, is charged with sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman during a ride home on Nov. 9, 2025.
The victim said she booked an Uber in the early morning and was picked up at a southside business, then driven to a downtown location for a brief stop. The driver allegedly took her to a secluded spot in the river valley, where the assault occurred, before dropping her off at home.
Investigators found that the trip to the river valley and her home had not been logged in the Uber app. When police went to Singh’s home to arrest him, they discovered he had left Canada. His vehicle was seized and a warrant issued.
He was detained by the Canada Border Services Agency upon returning on Dec. 27, 2025. Singh has been released on bail after surrendering his passport and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
