I grew up in a small town just outside of Kansas City in the 90s, where the summers smelled like cut grass and my daddy’s coffee… Those were dark, painful years to be a @Royals fan (IYKYK), but baseball never left our living room.
Every single night, the @Braves were on TBS, and my daddy was right there in his recliner, glued to the screen. Which meant I was too — curled up on his lap like I belonged there, my little head resting against his chest, feeling the rumble of his voice as he’d yell at the umpires or cheer for the big hits.
Glavine painting the corners. Maddux out-thinking everyone. Smoltz bringing the heat. Chipper with that sweet swing. And Andruw Jones… that kid flew like he had wings in center field. They weren’t just players to us. They were family. And there in the dugout, calm as ever, was Bobby Cox — red ass and rock-steady next to Rockin’ Leo, managing those legends like a father himself.
That’s when I fell head-over-heels in love with this game. Not because I understood strike zones or ERAs… but because it gave me my daddy. It gave me a reason to stay up late, to feel his arm around me, to hear him laugh and hope out loud when the world outside felt heavy.
Bobby Cox passing today feels like someone reached in and took a piece of my childhood with him.😭
Thank you, Bobby. For giving a tired, struggling dad in Kansas City something beautiful to care about every single night. For the nights you kept the lights on in our little living room. For the memories I’ll carry forever — sitting on my daddy’s lap, falling in love with baseball, and never wanting the game to end.
You didn’t just manage a team. You helped build a thousand father-child stories just like mine.🫶🏼♥️
Rest easy, sir. And tell my daddy up there that his little girl still watches every chance she gets… because of both of you.⚾
