I met PhD students attached to the research programme investigating youth migration from rural areas to the cities. I appreciated the importance of their work and wished them success.

Last Friday, I joined colleagues and partners at the East African Community of Practice (CoP) on Active Mobility in Kampala, hosted by Makerere University School of Public Health and the CityMove Project. Under the theme “Empowering Active Communities”, the conference united delegates from Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Burundi, and Uganda with key technical people like @mandyug @rawleng to share insights and experiences. Active mobility means healthier lives, cleaner air, less congestion, safer streets, and more vibrant communities. Let’s walk and cycle toward sustainable East African cities! This week, the @City_MoveKla project led by Dr. @rawleng and supported by @EUinUG convened a two-day East African Regional Community of Practice (CoP) on Active Mobility from 30–31 October 2025, bringing together over 30 policymakers, urban planners, health professionals, researchers, and civil society actors committed to advancing active transport systems across the region. The gathering aimed to strengthen the implementation of interventions that promote physical activity and sustainable mobility in East African cities, in line with the CityMove initiative’s mission to foster healthier, people-centred urban spaces.

About the Topic: The increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of heat waves, driven by climate change, pose a growing public health threat worldwide. Africa is disproportionately vulnerable to these risks due to geographical, socio-economic, infrastructural, and health system factors. Despite this vulnerability, research and surveillance on heat wave-associated mortality in Africa remain limited. This webinar will examine the evidence and approaches for quantifying mortality from heat waves, drawing on experiences from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, and South Africa.
