West Bengal has proposed a ₹200 crore scientific solid-waste management pilot under Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0 across four municipalities in the Asansol–Durgapur industrial belt. Discussed during the national SBM review meeting at Vigyan Bhavan, the project targets one of East India’s largest coal-steel urban clusters, which generates massive volumes of municipal and industrial waste daily. The initiative is expected to include source segregation, Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), composting units, scientific landfill systems, and biomining of legacy dump yards. If successful, the model could later expand to Kolkata’s peripheral municipalities, Howrah, Siliguri and Haldia, as Bengal shifts toward infrastructure-driven urban sanitation management.
