He studied at the Mining Academy in Berlin and was one of the founders of the Committee for the Independence of Georgia, established in 1914 by Georgian emigrants and students in Germany following the outbreak of World War I. The Committee's goal was to achieve national independence under a German protectorate. George Machabeli sought to restore the Georgian monarchy through a dynastic marriage between a Georgian princely family and the German ruling house. During World War I, Machabeli undertook several expeditions on German submarines, transporting weapons to Georgia from Istanbul while simultaneously conducting negotiations with political groups in Georgia and the North Caucasus. Following the annexation of Georgia by Soviet Russia, he emigrated to the United States. He died and is buried in New York.
