OTD in 1848, Mexico ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thus ceding California, Nevada, Utah and parts of four other modern-day U.S. states to the United States for $15 million.
Celebrate! Unless you believe that area would be better off run by Mexico!

@rbk6976 You probably know it was the term to describe the period during WWII from the fall of Poland and the invasion of France, etc. As I recall it means “sitting war.”

It seems possible that this cease fire might go on indefinitely without any “deal.” Both sides will make their demands, but neither will have any interest in restarting the shooting. We might end up with months or years of sitzkrieg, the least bad equilibrium for all.

The worse thing that the U.S. ever did to Mexico was not take over the whole country in 1848. It would have saved some good people a very long walk.

The Mexican-American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Mexico gave up its claims to Texas, recognized the Rio Grande as the border, and ceded a huge chunk of land, including California and most of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. In return, the U.S. paid Mexico 15 million dollars. Texas itself wasn’t purchased in this treaty. It had already joined the U.S. as a state back in 1845 after breaking away from Mexico earlier. A small southern strip of Arizona came later in the 1853 Gadsden Purchase for 10 million dollars.

Farmers in the Philippines are turning banana plants into a fabric that can replace plastic!
The fabric is called Bananatex, and it's made from abacá, a type of banana plant that grows incredibly fast in the Philippine highlands.
The fabric can be treated with sustainable water-repellent finishes, making it strong enough for backpacks and outdoor gear.
Bananatex is now helping companies 'replace plastics with plants' in their products, and it provides income for farmers in the Philippines while helping restore forests too. (1 min, 3 sec)

Sometimes I think Congress *wants* Americans to have contempt for them, because it means we will not take them seriously, which might require they work.
