@lesliepwriter A long passage in italics, like a long passage in parentheses, or a long aside or footnote, makes me ask if the writer is in control of her material. Maybe the passage can be omitted, or maybe it can be integrated into the main argument or narrative.

Serious question for writers/readers! How much italics is too much? How long can a passage be before you roll your eyes in irritation and start skimming? Or am I the outlier who's annoyed, and I really, truly can put a (2+ page) section of this long story in italics???

@lesliepwriter As an editor, I often see bad titles attached to good essays and stories. When I suggest other titles, the author usually agrees.

Yes, this! Don't toss up your hands and say, "I'm bad at titles." Learn to be better and more intentional with titling. It's a skill that can be picked up, not a genetic trait you have or don't have.
Maureen Langloss@MaureenLangloss

Titles are so important for getting an editor or reader's attention. I'm always amazed how often readers/editors comment on titles when reading subs on Submittable. They are constantly critiqued. "I loved the story/poem but not the title" is a comment I've read over & over.

@lesliepwriter One character at the table is suddenly seized by an epileptic fit or a case of the willies. The table begins to vibrate, as if in an earthquake, throwing everyone into confusion. A new person enters and accuses the others of secretly plotting against him/her.

All my characters seem to do is sit around a table and talk. Get up, people! DO SOMETHING! (Writing advice welcome.)

@lesliepwriter As a teenager, I played the original cast recording over and over and unwittingly memorized all the lyrics.

@lesliepwriter I believe I am capable of love, though I write literary fiction, but who is worthy of this rare gift?

@emeek Both are correct, but I prefer the long drawn out, open-ended, spacious one.

The past few nights, I read Patriotic Gore, by Edmund Wilson (pictured) Studies in the Literature of the American Civil War. Francis Grierson is in there, a mysterious figure who was a piano performer in Europe and the author of several books, one on Paris luminaries of his day.

Over the weekend, I read some stories by John O'Hara. They hold their own with stories by Cheever, Fitzgerald, and Updike. "The Doctor's Son," about the influenza epidemic of 1918, had eerie overtones of the pandemic a century later.

Buddy, if pushing back against stereotypes is the primary goal of your work, you aren't into art. You're into marketing.
