Oh, Doug, no. No. Christians are to examine the fruit. If the fruit is rotten, the teacher, *who is subject to greater judgment* does not get to cry "user error." The teaching maps. Here is a thread of receipts: 🧵

@ZachWLambert A novel approach. Refute a teaching by rounding up people who were victims of those who refused to follow the teaching.

Sheila Wray Gregoire has become one of the most influential voices in the Christian conversation surrounding sex, marriage, and evangelical culture. But do her conclusions actually stand up to biblical and logical scrutiny? My latest with @The_real_annek

@CarlaPyle2 @alisa_childers @The_real_annek I think her survey methodology is suspect. She recruits people into her surveys in such a way that she only ends up with discontented women. I think the term for it is snowball sampling.

In the thread you seem to say that your husband was specifically not the problem, but rather the expectations placed on your marriage by external forces of the Christian community you were part of. It would seem to me that your marriage was fundamentally successful and the difficulties came from outside it.

@FrankWa97380917 Interestingly enough we see that Titus was to appoint female elders. The role of pastor wasn't really developed in the days of the early church. But in as much as it was, we see women in those roles. So, no, I don't think it is "clear."

@MBurtwrites Then you should understand clearly that women are not to be pastors/elders in the church…that is crystal clear.

@hrkahrig Lol. My husband thinks it's funny how random internet guys will demand to speak to him.

@John_Barach @ItsGoneAwry YES. This teaching is/was destructive for men as well. Eg I just learned there is a book forthcoming from a man discussing the impact of purity culture on men. An important piece!

@MBurtwrites @ItsGoneAwry It sometimes seems as if the Christian life is a 24/7 self-help course, and that's true for men, too. I'd like to see a treatment of how these things affect (and become a heavy yoke for) good men, not bullies who use these books to justify mistreating their wives, but good men.

I was 23 & in my first yr of marriage when my 23YO husband & I moved cross country to be assistant B&B keepers in the CO mountains. Looking for community, we enrolled in the new-marrieds class at our non-denominational church. 🧵

@kardinal_der The thing is that all that “propositional truth” is exactly what I mean in the OP by manmade ideas—humans attempting to understand or apply various things.

@MBurtwrites The quantity of narrative in Scripture is no argument against the value of propositional truth found in the same. The propositional truth often makes sense of the narrative. Who would understand the significance of Jesus’s death on the cross without propositional truth?

@kardinal_der No. Women were the first to preach the resurrection. To men. Because Jesus told them to. Women were also there on the Day of Pentecost, when the Spirit descended & empowered them.

@MBurtwrites Do you at least agree that women should not give sermons to men?

This post reached 1M views. I posted it again this week as part of the Spiritual Treadmills series, & the algorithm on Facebook picked it up. I don’t know how the algorithms work, but clearly the fall out of Christian Excellence ideas are something many people resonate with.

@MBurtwrites Women fielding questions from a mixed audience about sermons. You are the one with the unbiblical take. But your goal seems to be to shame the men who are taking a biblical stand because it irritates your closet feminism.
