The House Committee on Energy and Commerce passed the Kids Act, a mix of KOSA, Screen Act, and several other ID/facescan verification bills. There is still time before a final vote in the House, as well as a Senate version. (More info below)

๐จAMAZING NEWS. The SCREEN Act and the App Store Accountability Act have advanced through the House Energy & Commerce Committee. We are one step closer to a federal age verification standard to protect children online. Call the vote, @SpeakerJohnson!

๐จFYI: Gavin Newsom has already signed California Assembly Bill 1043 which mandates that operating systems including Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD implement system-level age (identity) verification. This takes effect on January 1st, 2027. Colorado also has a similar act called SB26-051 which is currently advancing through the committees and ready for full Senate consideration. It would come into effect on January 1st, 2028 if passed. Utah, Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama all currently have app layer verification laws, but not OS level YET. So OS level verification isn't a future thing. It's happening now. They are chokepointing the internet. Enjoy these days.

Thank you, Sen. Blackburn, for spearheading this fight! Congress must stand with American families and pass the Senate version of the Kids Online Safety Act with a duty of care and no preemption of state laws. #PassKOSA

๐KOSA ADVANCES 86-1! An overwhelming bipartisan majority advanced the Kids Online Safety Act past cloture โ a huge victory for young people, parents, and advocates who worked tirelessly to rein in Big Tech's predatory algorithms and designs. People spoke. Lawmakers listened.

Discord delays global rollout of age verification after backlash techcrunch.com/2026/02/24/disโฆ

BREAKING: "Social media is for adults, it is not for children." Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch says 'it is about time' the UK imposes a ban on social media for under-16s. trib.al/2etCXcc ๐บ Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

A package of age verification bills that will impact the ENTIRE internet. After markup it gets sent to the House. There is a lot of lobbying on both sides to get these passed, but the reason they haven't so far is public pushback. IT WORKS. Call your House rep at 202-224-3121

Discord is postponing the rollout of its age-verification system to later this year after facing backlash.

NEW: Bilirakis tells @omaseddiq and me that there will be a kids digital markup next week

NEW: House Energy and Commerce plans to mark up a package of kids' online safety legislation next week, @RepGusBilirakis tells me Democrats say they have not seen substantive changes to bills such as KOSA. Republicans say talks are ongoing. news.bgov.com/bloomberg-goveโฆ

Due to the massive wave of backlash, Discord is postponing its global age verification until the second half of 2026. >This gives time to add more verification methods (like credit card options being discussed) and improve transparency. >Some teen safety defaults (like stricter settings for under-18 estimates) are still rolling out in phases. >They are also planning better features, such as improved spoiler channels for handling mature or hidden content.

Countries are passing laws requiring state ID in order to use social media ("protecting kids" is the pretext), but the real effect is to track everyone online . It upsets some when I say it, but @TaylorLorenz has been one of the few reporting on and warning about this danger.

The First Amendment is just branding at this point. Speech is only โfreeโ until it threatens power. Theyโll let you scream into a void all you want, but the second your words make an impact, theyโll move to silence you immediately.

In an alarming development, 40 state Attorneys General are urging Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act. KOSA would give the federal government broad control over how online speech platforms can be designed and operated, in a way that would never be tolerated for any other kind of media. FIRE urges Congress to reject this unconstitutional bill.

My video about KOSA - the internet censorship bill Congress is about to pass - is at 3 likes 11 hours after posting on TikTok. Pressure your senators now not to vote for this. Itโs unlimited authoritarian speech censorship power to the government.
