I am deeply honored by, and grateful for, President Donald J. Trump’s nomination to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media – a role I will hold concurrently with this one if confirmed. I am excited to get started, and look forward to engaging with the Hill. Truth-telling and censorship circumvention, including in closed societies, are critical causes for me. They are critical functions for State. They are critical reasons why America continues to fund the media entities housed within USAGM, even in an age of flourishing private-sector media. Deputy CEO @KariLake and Acting CEO @DepSecStateMR will continue to lead USAGM pending my confirmation. I applaud their energy and dedication, and I look forward to meeting the rest of the USAGM team. I will work hard to gain the confidence of the Senate in this dual role. Fortunately, I’ve learned from the best in this regard – my current boss, @SecRubio.

The U.S. Department of State is aware of potential disruptions to Spirit Airlines operations and will continue to monitor impacts to American citizens abroad. We encourage all American citizens who are concerned Spirit passengers to consult with resources and guidance from the U.S. Department of Transportation. While commercial availability remains readily available across the affected regions, the Department is committed to assisting Americans in need of support returning to the United States.

The Trump Administration welcomes the emerging consensus among EU countries on migration, asylum, and deportation policy. Europe’s future depends on secure borders and controlled immigration. Glad to hear from @magnusbrunner about the EU’s progress and discuss what more we can do together.

SECRETARY RUBIO: Things can get better in Cuba with serious economic reforms, but not with the current people in charge. They are economically incompetent. They've rolled out the welcome mat to our adversaries to operate in Cuban territory against our national interests with impunity.

Totally false as per usual. 1. Economic growth cannot be separated from saving lives. Economic growth and prosperity are the root of nearly all social progress, and lifting millions out of poverty requires tangible economic growth. 2. Humanitarian aid is different than development aid. The U.S. remains the largest humanitarian donor in the world and in this Administration has led critical reforms to focus humanitarian dollars on tangible lifesaving impact. - In Geneva, @UNReliefChief and I signed our anchor pledge to the @UN Humanitarian Reset, which has hyper-prioritized work and removed duplication to double lifesaving impact per dollar spent and save 87 million lives this year around the world. - While maintaining retroviral treatment for 20.6 million people w/ HIV, we have reformed U.S. global health funding through the America First Global Health Strategy— emphasizing country ownership and self-reliance, driving the largest ever African mobilization of domestic resources for health, and funding transformative investments in U.S. medications like @GileadSciences’ Lenacapavir. 3. The referenced “estimate” is entirely fabricated. It’s based on totally inaccurate assumptions about the level and type of lifesaving humanitarian programming we have maintained, reformed, and invested in. Repeating those lies uncritically is the height of bad faith.
Nicholas Kristof@NickKristof

It's true: Humanitarian aid isn't great at driving economic growth. What it excels at is saving lives. And what the Trump administration is good at is dismantling aid efforts that saved lives. A BU estimate is that more than half a million children have died so far as a result.

Of course, the OECD pledge misreported by Politico is not our only free-speech initiative. But we have other causes in our public diplomacy portfolio ranging from commercial diplomacy to sports, etc. In aggregate, the amount spent by authoritarian regimes (and pro-censorship civil society groups) to oppose free speech far exceeds what I’m able to spend to promote it. Fortunately, freedom sells itself. I work hard to be a good steward of our overall public diplomacy budget. Our grantmaking is totally transparent, and navigable via USASpending.

Politico is very interested in my Twitter account, but not interested enough to fact-check their leading claim: it’s $500 thousand, not $500 million. Rest assured, though: if I could reasonably pledge $500m to the cause of free speech, I would.

At post-WHCD brunch, spoke with a journalist at a prestige publication who lamented mass-hysteric brainrot among their readers — many of whom are commenting that last night’s events (and possibly also Butler) were “staged”. For self-serving or myopic reasons, some people try to pigeonhole this sort of malicious, motivated conspiracism as a partisan phenomenon. It isn’t. What matters is how we react to it, especially given that censorship is (rightly) off the table.

Very important step for nonprofit-funding transparency by @SecScottBessent. Fiscal sponsorships connect fledging c3s (that haven’t undergone compliance vetting) with established ones. Hypothetically, if you wanted to donate to an established charity — either because you’re a respectable institution, or because you’re relying on a DAF for anonymity — but wanted to fund some sort of militant street auxiliary activity that established charities maintain distance from, your donation might get funneled through a fiscal sponsorship. So, we should make it very easy to see who’s fiscal-sponsoring whom.

At the Tidal Basin, celebrated Japan's gift of 250 new cherry trees as we mark America's 250th birthday. Cherry blossoms symbolize the enduring friendship between our peoples and the strength of the U.S.-Japan Alliance — growing stronger each season. 🌸 @JapanEmbDC @MofaJapan_en
