@WinterwolvesG I have an alienware laptop with a 12700h, which takes around 02:30 minutes to build my game. My Macbook Pro M4 (regular, not the Pro chip), takes 00:20 seconds 🤡

thinking about using the macmini as main development computer, it's much faster than my other two minipc (Intel and Ryzen CPUs), despite having less RAM and SSD space. Building a big RPG in Ren'Py took 45s less on the macmini which is impressive over 3-4 min total time #indiedev

Thanks to (my) advancements in technology, you can now make yourself a desktop friend in GameMaker! (window_shape now supports partial transparency for smooth edges/shadows/etc.) Character sprite by @PennyPenzilla!

If only more games were ported and optimized for Apple Silicon! Here’s the 1080p test, showing the M3 Max beating out this beast Alienware laptop. Pretty insane!

The M3 Max performs on par with the RTX 4080 in 'Baldur's Gate' ! (1440p) Not claiming Macs are top gaming rigs, but once game studios decide to support Apple Silicon natively, they could lead in comfy gaming with solid performance, low heat/noise, and great battery life!

@GameMakerEngine Oh, I forgot: better tools for debugging memory. Finding memory leaks is a pain, I had to make my own tools to track which data structures are in use or not. Also retrieve how much RAM and VRAM is used (I know a hidden function but it varies from platform to platform)

@GameMakerEngine Asynchronous sprite loading! The sprite_add() function loads a sprite without stopping the game... if you're loading it from a URL. If you load it from a file, the game stops to load it. Let us use the Image Loaded event for local sprites as well

The new GameMaker beta features gpu_get_depth and gpu_set_depth function implementations of mine! These let you change Z coordinate that "flat" graphics will be drawn at, which can be used for visual tricks (like "sprite stacking") or to easily pass a bit of info to a shader.

I made a new GameMaker extension! It gives your game a custom window frame, which acts just like the native one (to the point of having shadows and rounded borders on Windows 11) while addressing a multitude of issues and commonly requested features🧵

@SnoutUp @MrElliot1210 The more RAM you have, the more the OS does cache on it, reducing the need of disk access (good, RAM is way faster than disk). If you run out of memory, disk (slow) is used as swap memory (fake RAM). The faster the disk, the better the performance.

Spacious SSD and Windows reinstall makes me think I could spend another year without a new PC. Current one is from 2016. Intel Core i5-6500, Quad, 3.2GHz 16 GB DDR4 AMD RX 580

@SnoutUp @MrElliot1210 A good M2 does wonders specially when being used as memory swap (which would certainly happen only having 16GB installed). That said, your machine looks pretty competent for the kind of games you make. More RAM is the only thing I’d put on the table if you can afford it.

@MrElliot1210 Also this motherboard doesn't have a slot for M.2 SSD, although I'm not sure how it compares with standard SSD over common usage. I'm not moving TBs of data around.

@m1s3ry_ @XorDev Not a terrible idea at all if used for the right thing. I have a system like this implemented in a project and it works wonders reducing GPU usage (at the expense of some VRAM). The "cached" shaders aren't heavy enough to cause stutter, naturally.
