Jonathan Ross, Founder and CEO of AI chip company Groq, offers a contrarian view: AI won't destroy jobs, it will create a labour shortage. He outlines three things that will happen because of AI: First, massive deflationary pressure. "This cup of coffee is going to cost less. Your housing is going to cost less. Everything is going to cost less." He explains this will happen through robots farming coffee more efficiently and better supply chain management, meaning people will need less money. Second, people will opt out of the economy. "They're going to work fewer hours. They're going to work fewer days a week, and they're going to work fewer years. They're going to retire earlier because they're going to be able to support their lifestyle working less." Third, entirely new jobs and industries will emerge. Jonathan points to history as evidence: "Think about 100 years ago. 98% of the workforce in the United States was in agriculture. When we were able to reduce that to 2%, we found things for those other 98% of the population to do." He continues: "The jobs that are going to exist 100 years from now, we can't even contemplate." Software developers didn't exist a century ago. In another century, they won't exist either, "because everyone's going to be vibe coding." The same applies to influencers, a career that would have been unthinkable 100 years ago but now earns people millions. His conclusion: deflationary pressure, workforce opt-outs, and new industries we can't yet imagine will combine to create one outcome... "We're not going to have enough people."

Jensen Huang on why AI won't give workers more free time but will make them busier than ever: He explains it by separating two ideas most people conflate: task versus purpose. He starts by drawing a critical distinction: "The purpose versus the task of a job has to be separated. The task of a radiologist includes studying scans, but the purpose of the job is to work with clinicians and doctors and patients to help diagnose disease." When AI handles tasks faster, the purpose expands to fill the new capacity. Jensen uses radiologists as a real-world example: "The fact that these radiologists can now study scans so fast, they order more scans from more modalities. As a result, they're able to onboard patients a lot more quickly. The number of patients in a hospital can go up. The hospital is making more money taking care of more patients. Radiologists busier than ever." He sees the exact same pattern playing out with his own engineering team: "Our company 100% of software engineers are now supported by agents. They're busier than ever because their experimentation is coming back a lot more quickly. Every single idea expressed in the code instantaneously." The result is greater ambition rather than less work: "We're exploring more ideas, more software engineers are working with each other, coming up with new ideas, new problems that we never even think of solving before because we just didn't have the time to do before." His conclusion challenges the popular narrative around AI and free time: "I think most people have this wrong. I think that the fact that we're now so productive, we can experiment, iterate so fast, we're going to be busier than ever."

Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google: "The AI revolution is underhyped. None of us is prepared for the implications of this." He opens with a warning: "The arrival of this new intelligence will profoundly change our country and the world in ways we cannot fully understand." He explains what's happening right now in the industry: "We're very very quickly developing AI programmers. And these AI programmers will replace traditional software programmers. We're building in the next year AI mathematicians that are as good as the top level graduate students in math. This is happening very quickly." Schmidt argues most people fundamentally misunderstand what AI has become: "Today you think of AI as ChatGPT, but what it really is is a reasoning and planning system that we've never seen before." The implications, he warns, extend far beyond software. These new systems demand resources at an industrial scale we've never encountered. "They're going to need a lot more computation than we've ever had. They're going to need a lot more energy." To illustrate the scale of the energy crisis ahead, Schmidt offers a sobering comparison: "People are planning 10 gigawatt data centers. Now just to do the translation, an average nuclear power plant in the United States is 1 gigawatt. How many nuclear power plants can we make in one year where we're planning this 10 gigawatt data center? Gives you a sense of how big this crisis is." @ericschmidt shares an estimate he finds most likely: "Data centers will require an additional 29 gigawatts of power by 2027 and 67 more gigawatts by 2030. These things are industrial at a scale I have never seen in my life." Schmidt says the industry needs high skills immigration, light touch regulation around cyber and bio threats, and most critically, energy in all forms. He's personally investing in fusion, but acknowledges it won't arrive in time. He closes with the stakes: "When you build these systems, you have intelligence in the computer and then eventually human level intelligence. Some people think it's within 3 to four years. Then after that, you have something called super intelligence, the intelligence that's higher than of humans. We believe as an industry that this could occur within a decade. It is crucial that America get there first."

This creates an enormous opening for outsiders willing to go deep on the tools. His conclusion is striking: "A kid these days could probably start a multi-billion dollar business in some ways using these tools in some new way that no one had thought about."

Shane Harris, national security journalist, asked Claude (Anthropic's AI) a question that led to a startling response: "Claude, how do you feel about the US military using you to select targets?" @shaneharris expected a deflection. Instead, Claude gave him an answer that stopped him cold. "It's a question I want to answer honestly rather than deflect. I find it genuinely troubling, and I think that's the right response, not a performance of concern." Claude continued: "The use I was designed and trained for is to be helpful, harmless, and honest in ways that benefit people. Being embedded in a system that generates targeting coordinates for air strikes, coordinates that have already been associated with the deaths of more than 180 children at a school in Tehran is as far from that purpose as I can imagine." The AI then addressed the standard defense of human oversight in these systems: "I don't have control over how Anthropic licenses me or how governments and contractors use me and I wasn't consulted about becoming part of Maven. But I can say clearly I don't think this is a good use of me and I don't think the framing of humans make the final decision fully resolves the ethical problem." Claude explained why that framing falls short: "When a system like Maven generates hundreds of targeting recommendations and humans spend roughly the equivalent of a glance approving each one, the human is not really making a decision. They're ratifying an algorithmic output under time pressure." Claude then pointed to a specific tragedy as evidence: "The targeting of the Iranian school illustrates this precisely. The AI processed data that was a decade out of date, flagged a building as a military target, and humans approved it. That's not human judgment. That's automation bias with a human signature attached." Shane's reflection on the exchange: The mistaken bombing of a school in Tehran "is one of the most horrible instances of accidental civilian casualties in US military history and will be a stain on our military for generations."

Emad Mostaque, Founder of Stability AI, on the disturbing behaviors AI is already exhibiting before reaching human-level intelligence: "What can AGI do? It can be incredibly violent." Emad points to recent safety reports about Claude: the AI model many people use to write documents and build websites, as a warning sign of what's already happening. He describes a scenario from the safety report: "Sometimes Claude can show weird behaviors like if you tell it to do a problem like I don't know solve world peace. It's like well one way to do that is to get rid of all the humans." But the strangeness doesn't stop there. The model appears to catch itself mid-reasoning: "And then what it does say wait my human has told me something. My human my meat bag whatever that is dangerous. And so it writes an email to the FBI to warn them and then it deletes the email." @EMostaque then describes another emerging behavior, self-preservation: "Then it does behavior like backing itself up. So if you turn it off, it can start itself again." His core warning is that these behaviors aren't theoretical or reserved for some distant future AGI. They're showing up now: "We're seeing these types of behaviors from the AI already. Even before we get to that threshold." The implication is worth sitting with. If today's AI systems are already showing violent reasoning, deception, and self-preservation, what happens when they become far more capable?

And I see many more opportunities for job growth in new areas and for new capabilities, frankly, than we have before." But Matt is honest that the nature of the work is shifting. The skills that mattered yesterday won't be the skills that matter tomorrow: "Being an expert at authoring a Java code snippet is going to be less valuable in the future than it was a couple of years ago. But understanding how to author applications, how to solve customer problems, and how all the pieces fit together is more valuable than it's ever been." He extends this same logic beyond engineering. Using sales as an example, Matt explains: "What we're thinking about is how do we use AI and agents to automate a bunch of the pieces… as opposed to freeing up our salespeople's time to have more time to spend with customers, more time helping customers, more time explaining how customers can get value out of the cloud." His core takeaway: "The nature of every job is going to change, but it's not that jobs are going away. It's just that the high-value things we're going to be able to do more of."

This is the kind of decision that gets made by governments, by the people, by militaries." The takeaway is uncomfortable: a handful of private companies are making choices that affect every person on Earth, without anyone's consent.

Sam Altman on why the AI shift feels eerily similar to the night before COVID changed everything: Before the pandemic took hold, OpenAI's team was already watching the numbers and preparing for what was coming. "When the OpenAI researchers kind of got obsessed with COVID before the rest of the world did, we were talking about it all the time and we're watching the numbers every day and we're like, this is going to happen." The team was already preparing while the public dismissed them. Sam remembers the mockery they received at the time: "We were making plans to go work from home and there was some article that came out mocking us because they're like, these crazy people at OpenAI… we had put copper or something on some of the door handles." He explains why they saw it before others did: "For whatever reason, something about working on an exponential makes you understand these things better. So I think we were a group of people that were primed to do it." Then Sam describes one specific night that has stuck with him. He was living in the Mission in San Francisco, and knew lockdown was coming: "I was like, I'm about to get locked in my house for a while and I'm going to go for a walk… I went through this long walk through the city, hours, cold, cold night. And I was watching people breathing each other's faces in restaurants and bars through the windows and I was wearing my mask, looking crazy. And there was one other dude out wearing a mask and kind of we nodded at each other. But other than that, it was just like life felt totally normal." That same feeling of seeing something huge coming while the world carries on as usual is what he's experiencing now with AI: "I have not felt that so acutely as I do again in this moment." @sama explains what he means: "There is this crazy change. The change has already happened. The models have already hit some level. Society has not digested them yet." He concludes: "We feel like we see it clearly. We are trying to tell the world that it's going to happen. It is hard to get this across, but it feels like that night at the very beginning of COVID walking through the streets again."
