I will never get over the tragic death of Pat Tillman and how the US Army continues to use his face and name on recruitment propaganda despite his family’s pleas for them to stop. He sacrificed his NFL career and enlisted in the military, believing the propaganda that was given to him after 9/11, only to realize the true devastation US troops were causing in the Middle East. When he planned to speak out about it, he was killed by friendly fire from his own unit. He even screamed at them that it was him, but they still fired. It’s believed his death was orchestrated because of his plan to give an interview about what the US was really doing in the Middle East and what he witnessed once he was back home. He wrote about it in his journal, which the Army burned, as well as his uniform after his death. His family was not even informed that he had died. They found out after a journalist arrived at their home asking for a statement. The military attempted to cover up what happened and lied to his family about his death. They even ordered his comrades to lie to the family about what happened. His brother was also enlisted and discovered what really happened, which led to an investigation and the eventual revelation of the truth. At Pat’s funeral, his brother called out the US Army for what they did, and his family has continued to speak out against the military. Despite this, the Army still uses Pat on recruitment flyers against the family's wishes. He even completed the necessary training to become an Army Ranger, one of the hardest and most advanced positions in the Army. He thought what the US military was doing was defending America, but then realized they were killing innocent people once he was deployed. We'll never know what he saw that led him to speak out. We'll never know what was in his journal because the US military destroyed it. I can't even imagine the horrifying stuff he saw. Pat was a real hero who realized that the military grooms young men and women to dedicate their lives to something they do not even know the truth about. He wanted to speak out and was killed because of it. He'd be devastated to see us starting another war and people still falling for the propaganda.
