@joehudsonsmall I thought you looked very dapper in that sharp tie making your little speech. Very cute!

Greens have chair of council – for the first time in history our meetings won’t be stage-managed by Labour – we will treat all councillors equally and guard against executive overreach.
NIP have chair of overview and scrutiny, probably the most powerful role besides the Labour mayor (who was directly elected by residents).
Together Greens and NIP chair all the scrutiny committees. We also chair pensions and most other committees – and between Greens and NIP, we have a majority on every single committee.
Yes, Labour only got vice chair of council…
That’s it – NIP call this an “unholy alliance” with Labour for some reason…
NIP vagueposting would give you the impression that we gave Labour the mayor, chair, and control of council committees.
That never happened.
Greens are serious about finding common ground where we can and working for all the people of Newham, while NIP would apparently rather grandstand and attack people who should be working together.
Newham Independents 💛@NewhamIndParty
At this evenings @NewhamLondon Full Council meeting. @NewhamGreens and @newham_labour joined into an unholy alliance. The residents of Newham were betrayed tonight, your vote against Labour was discarded by the Newham Greens.

Every once in a while I remember that not only are all my impressions of the "average" American mediated by tons of generalizations (this is true for everyone's impressions of every group, see Lippmann's notion of a "stereotype")—but I'm almost completely divorced from the "common culture," to the extent that there is one anymore. I don't know new TV, and hardly know new movies or new music—I don't avoid it, but I don't seek it out. I don't watch the news and only use Reels to watch shitposts and marmot videos. So I can't really understand how most people today form their models of the world. (@credenzaclear2, this is why I'm an unqualified Gen-Z whisperer!) Twitter and Substack efficiently whisk me along to other angsty weirdos by the algorithm or other alchemical arts. I socialize with effete New York intellectuals instead of my hometown friends. Maybe I get closeish to the PMC zeitgeist when I open New York Times newsletters, and that's the best I can do.
I was born into a particular urban, secular, liberal socioeconomic clade and much of my conscious effort over the past two decades has been expended on progressively winnowing it down so that I affiliate with ever-more narrow subgroups corresponding with my interests. The common culture is near-dead but I avoid it anyway. Maybe the common culture has decohered into common cultures, now plural but still massive and influential, but I don't fully understand any of them, and probably don't know that some of them exist.
I can't/don't understand what anyone thinks without extrapolating from an absurdly narrow perspective, and this is unlikely to change soon. Isn't it a little futile to care about "politics" at this point? I've become increasingly sympathetic to hermits and obnoxious pursuers of esoterica, as both results involve less polling.
