I’m looking forward to my first debate tomorrow. The other candidates have done this many times. This will be my first, and we’ve committed to several more over the next few weeks, so it won’t be my last. I’ll be honest. It’s hard to get too excited because this isn’t a real debate. One hour with six candidates gives you almost no time to explain anything. Forty-five seconds on the biggest issues facing our state is not a serious conversation. It’s a format built for sound bites, not solutions. What South Carolina actually needs is a real discussion about how we fix the problems everyone knows we have. We have crumbling roads, failing schools, high taxes, low median family income, and rising violent crime. We are a red state governed like a blue state. Those outcomes are the result of decades of decisions made by this same group of people. If we are serious about changing that, then we need debates where candidates can explain their plans, challenge each other’s ideas, and be held accountable for what they’ve done and what they haven’t done. That kind of debate probably wouldn’t make for great television, but fixing a state is not supposed to be entertainment. Too many families are dealing with real problems for us to pretend that a series of rehearsed answers is enough. You’re going to hear a lot of familiar lines tomorrow. Ralph will talk about career politicians after being a career politicians for twenty years. Nancy will point to all the bills she introduced, while very few have actually become law. Pam will talk about what’s been accomplished over "the lost decade," even though the results across this state say otherwise. These are the same talking points we hear every cycle and the outcomes never change. Just more of the same from the Political Ruling Class. All messaging. No results. The people of South Carolina deserve more than that. They deserve real answers and real accountability. This should be the place where that happens. It probably won’t be, but I’m still going to show up and speak directly to the people. That’s what my campaign is about.
