@Wizpog69420 @AHoensbroech This wasn’t intentionally planned at all to happen on Canada day. Westjet and AMFA have been negotiating since march of 2023 and westjet keeps stretching it out kept delaying the meetings unfortunately it reached boiling point on busiest summer weekend. @WestJet @AMFANational

How disheartening having to cancel hundreds of flights in response to an unreasonable strike by AMFA despite being ordered into arbitration. Bargaining is over and a strike serves no one! This is irresponsible and I am very sorry for our guests who bear the consequences.

@403_Centennial @AMFANational @WestJet @porterairlines Yeah you’re right this strike is not gonna have any effect on bargaining. We know AMEs and AMFA have already lost after the binding arbitration decision but on our way out we are making sure you’re not gonna get any high executive bonuses at the end of the year cuz of this strike

@AMFANational You guys lost my support. You’re ruining peoples plans unnecessarily. With binding arbitration, there was a path to everyone being happy and you chose chaos. Selfish and unreasonable. Hope it backfires on you

@AMFANational You’ve been ordered to binding arbitration so what is this supposed to accomplish? This will result in a WORSE outcome for your members. Do the right thing and call off this wildcat strike before permanent damage is done

Mr. von Hoensbrorch is the CEO of WestJet. He is ignoring the fact that the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) just ruled that the strike is LEGAL and that hearings for binding arbitration won’t commence for WEEKS. If he wants to strike to end before that time …
Alexis von Hoensbroech@AHoensbroech

We welcome the Ministers confirmation that the events unfolding are inconsistent with his direction to the CIRB.
Urgent resolution is required to prevent further disruption to Canadians travel plans.

@WestJet @WestJet how much did u pay @SeamusORegan under the table for this. And @SeamusORegan leave westjet and AMFA alone let them negotiate their first contract. You are the reason why westjet is not negotiating in good faith.

@Westjet_Hugh @jssumios Find a different airline’s loyalty program. Westjet doesn’t care about its passengers or employees. Morale of its employees is at an all time low. Westjet management needs to take accountability for all this shit show.

Flight to Kelowna at 9am today cancelled 20 mins ago. Way to go, @WestJet. Not only are you taking advantage of your employees by not paying them, you're also taking advantage of your customers and putting us is a terrible position. Long time Gold member here.

@Lukeantrim @WestJet They dont want to leave airplanes at small airports because they might not have enough time left before they are due for maintenance. So they have to strategically plan it. Westjet fucked up big time they were too reliant on government and trudeau too fix their fuck up

There are currently no additional cancellations for flights departing tonight, Friday, June 28 as a result of AMFA’s decision to strike, and no risk to the safety of our operations.

@Lukeantrim @WestJet Dude westjet is a mess right now. They call only fly planes right now that are not due for maintenance for the next 24-48 hours. Other planes have to be brought back to the main base which is calgary and leave it there.

@Lukeantrim @WestJet Oh it’s sketchy as fuck. All the AMEs have walked out and the maintenance will probably done by people how are actually not trained to work on westjet airplanes and they wont be familiar with westjet procedures

@tommy2tone2021 @TheCJWest @WestJetNews Even if they are forced back to work. An AMEs signature is required before a flight leaves the gate. And they only need to find one small thing to delay a flight. So their signature holds a lot of power. And management cant do anything employee will just say it’s a safety issue

@TheCJWest @WestJetNews I don't work for WestJet but if I was forced back to work, what do you think I would do..... Not do my job.... or work as slooooow as possible.... or call in sick... or a number of other things... I wouldn't want anyone forced to do a job....

@CaleRamaker Yes this did happen almost 20 years ago. But today’s canadian industry is alot different than American industry. Westjet will never be able to find enough scab workers we just don’t have enough qualified AMEs in canada.

Seeing AMFA union trying a strike at WestJet & now maybe ignoring the Canadian govt - brings back memories of reporting on AMFA and Northwest Airlines. AMFA ran themselves out of every job with their strike at NWA. More on NWA's well-played plan. nytimes.com/2005/08/22/bus…
