#ELMagChat Students and teachers alike need more downtime, longer lunch breaks, and longer than 3 minutes in between classes. A block of non-academic time for students where they are free to just relax or visit teachers or work on homework.

Quote from school official as they called a snow day without virtual learning: “ we believe that traditional snow days provide a memorable and much loved childhood experience for our students”. As well it should be!

This question came up in a discussion today so I thought I'd send it out to the Twitterverse (Q was in response to the negative impact of retention on Ss)... What happens to students who are allowed to just move through the school system when they fail classes? Any research?

@mcleod @MrSchlangen @mctownsley @tguskey @TomSchimmer @john_hattie @SusanBrookhart @realhomeworkldy @kenoc7 @DouglasReeves @rickwormeli2 Retention is not an intervention. See Hattie’s list of influences for the effect size from his meta analysis of this influence. Spoiler: it’s -.32. Not only is it not helpful, retention harms students. They don’t need more of what didn’t work, but instead intervention on skills.

Would we even need explicit SEL programs if we gave students more control over what and how they learn--wouldn't much of SEL develop organically? How do they learn to self-regulate, problem-solve, and set goals when we micro-direct their learning?
