Started school this week. I have my students for multiple years. I know my eyes lit up when I saw them for the first time. What was absolutely beautiful was that their eyes reflected mine when they saw me! #edchat

Let’s stop worrying about last year’s “learning loss” and focus on—A. Student well-being and stress reduction and—B. Refining higher level thinking skills.

I think we have to decide what they’re “behind” on that’s important and what isn’t important. That first list is shorter than we think it is (e.g., we spend a lot of time on curricular stuff that really isn’t that important).

This question came up in a discussion today so I thought I'd send it out to the Twitterverse (Q was in response to the negative impact of retention on Ss)... What happens to students who are allowed to just move through the school system when they fail classes? Any research?

See Hattie’s list of influences for the effect size from his meta analysis of this influence. Spoiler: it’s -.32. Not only is it not helpful, retention harms students. They don’t need more of what didn’t work, but instead intervention on skills.

Would we even need explicit SEL programs if we gave students more control over what and how they learn--wouldn't much of SEL develop organically? How do they learn to self-regulate, problem-solve, and set goals when we micro-direct their learning?
